Flashback 6 Years - Lotus chief and West Ham fan Fernandes poised to buy QPR for 100m By SAMI MOKBEL and ALEX KAY Last updated at 11:34 PM on 28th July 2011 Air Asia tycoon Tony Fernandes is plotting a 100million move to buy Queens Park Rangers. Sportsmail understands the multi-millionaire businessman, who is team principal for Formula One outfit Team Lotus, is growing increasingly confident of striking a deal to take control of the Barclays Premier League club. Interest: Tony Fernandes Fernandes, 47, has already been shown around Loftus Road and talked to manager Neil Warnock about transfer funds as Rangers plan for their return to the top flight. Co-owner Bernie Ecclestone has said 100m would be enough to take over the west London club. Ecclestone holds a 62 per cent shareholding and although business partner Flavio Briatore has an option to buy the shares if the 80-year-old decides to sell, it is believed the pair have given Fernandes the go-ahead for the move. The club's other shareholder Lakshmi Mittal has failed to secure Ecclestone's shares after refusing to meet the asking price. A QPR statement confirmed 'preliminary discussions' had taken place over the sale. West Ham fan Fernandes lost out to David Gold and David Sullivan in his bid to buy the Hammers in January 2010 but claimed earlier this year that he was still looking to invest in the club. Will be the same thing, QPR Holding mostly hedged so he borrows like they did. The debt goes, thn starts building again. Wonder if he will own Loftus Rd. Hedgers are hungry, trade down and theyre lending to great prospects like this.

100 million where do they get that figure from? is that just a off the cuff valuation or is that what the club is really worth?

January 2010 news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/w/west_ham_utd/8457981.stmLotus boss Tony Fernandes steps up his bid for West Ham Lotus F1 team boss Tony Fernandes has joined Italian Massimo Cellino as a front-runner in the race to buy West Ham, BBC Sport understands. Ex-Birmingham City owners David Gold and David Sullivan and finance company Intermarket were in the hunt but are now believed to be outsiders. Cellino is the president of Serie A side Cagliari, where Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola ended his playing days. He is already in London, with Fernandes set to fly in before the weekend. Italian journalist Massimo Marianella told BBC Radio 5 live: "The deal (with Cellino) is not 100%, the Premier League is now checking his past and the real economic situation. Tony Fernandes is still a real option." It is understood West Ham will not engage in any activity in the January transfer window until the takeover situation is resolved. Sources close to the east London club have indicated a deal could be completed by the end of the week. All four interested parties claim to have connections with the Upton Park outfit, and it could be the £100m asking price is reached. Gold and Sullivan say they are long-standing Hammers fans and would make money available for Zola to spend on transfers. Intermarket, which was hit by the death at the weekend of chief executive officer Jim Bowe, is believed to have former West Ham striker Tony Cottee as an adviser but must prove it has the funds to secure a deal. Air Asia founder Fernandes has been a regular at home matches for many years. Cellino, who was sighted at QPR's home match on Tuesday, has publicly stated his admiration for former Italian international Zola, saying: "He left football with the same class he had on the pitch." But sources in Italy suggest the pair actually have a thorny relationship and that former Cagliari boss Daniele Arrigoni, a close friend of Cellino, could be brought in as manager if he wins control of the Hammers. The club are currently owned by CB Holding, which has indicated West Ham are £38m in debt. The main shareholder in CB Holding is Icelandic bank Straumur, which has previously said it is in no hurry to sell the club although that was before the various bidders became known. Zola has insisted he will not have to sell his star players in the January transfer window. England goalkeeper Robert Green, defender Matthew Upson and Carlton Cole have all been linked with interest from big clubs.

I would question the motives of anyone prepared to pay £100M to buy QPR! Either a complete mad man or someone worse than Ernie Becclestone braiva Friatore.

Earlier this year Air Asia were charging Perth to London, $169, or Perth to Paris $189. Last Christmas with my son & his family flew from Perth to Bali for $200. return. Needless to say they are the main carrier on this route.

Really have no strong views...
Offhand, probably prefer this to some mysterious Russian.
Wonder if he's buying in alone...or Ecclestone will keep some shares...Or role of Mittal... Or if other investors.. Any Kingfisher role?
The obvious racing links with Briatore/Ecclestone stand out.
Various permutations.
Apart from seeing he's not REALLY wealthy (to spend 100 million on a club), don't really have any views.
He was interested enough to want to buy West Ham...
We want someone interested in football...Involved. But not TOO involved. Willing to appoint and delegate.
Someone who doesnt want to screw the club (excessively); not screw our Stadium (what happens to Amulya loan)

Hey be nice to Tony, he wanted to buy West Ham, wants to get to the Premier League, so if QPR is available why not? As for 'only 300 million' Mittal is a billionaire, right? and what did he spend on the club? By the way I wonder if I could get a job at QPR being a Malaysian myself... hey, I'd take prices down to 20 pounds for all you lot! WATRB's 60 pounds! I could be the next Paladini! Err, not a good example, but I could send him my resume as long as I references from all you fine, loyal supporters!. He speaks with an English accent, knows football, being Malaysian, and has made Air Asia a very succesful low budget airline, doing far better than the national Carriers, Malaysian Airlines, MAS

(Etc) very smart hands off hires the best and let's them do their jobs, a cool and relaxed guy, no way is he abramovich or Flavio, more american style, hands-off, but hire good people, yes he is patient, Lotus haven't done anything, not a news hog, loves the limelight kind of guy, strictly behind the scenes, not like Branson for example. Not as showy. Ruthless? as in sacking people, no.. not at all. And I am not saying this just to make him look good, he is well regarded by friends and competitors.

In Malaysia there are two types of CEO's the gangster type, and the cool type, Fernandes is the latter, he is actually a fun character, you never see him lose his temper or get angry in public or lose it, when he lost West Ham, didn't complain at all, wished them all the best, a calm collected individual. In my opinion, he won't get involved in the team selection or sacking managers at all, he would probably love Warnock.

Most of Tony Fernandes' net worth (listed as $330 million) must already be tied up in his other businesses such as Air Asia and Lotus F1 so where is he going to find the money to buy out Bernie & Co AND then invest in the squad and a new stadium? Mittal will no doubt contribute towards squad/stadium investment and get actively involved once again if the current majority owner sells and departs but where is Fernandes going to find the money to buy him out without loading the club with even more debt? I still see Vijay Mallya getting involved, maybe alongside Fernandes, due to his relationship with Mittal and the obvious synergy with his brewing/spirits businesses but only if the asking price falls to a level that reflects the true value of the club. to be honest I don't know whether he's a big borrower, like the Glazers or the Liverpool guys, I think he stays within his means, don't forget he spent a lot of time in england, in school and work, hardly think he's a hit and run character, probably considers England his second home.

you're welcome, I think he really wanted West Ham, being a long time fan, so he might have been more hands on there, you , know fav team and all, but with rangers he should be able to keep some distance, not get too emotional, and he's already been hurt once, I think he'd be happy to 'grow' QPR. Air Asia is a 'small' style airline, and Rangers are kind of similar.

Air Asia boss to buy QPR
Air Asia owner Tony Fernandes is in talks with Queens Park Rangers over a possible £100m purchase of the football club. QPR: subject of acqusition talks involving Air Asia boss Tony Fernandes QPR: subject of acqusition talks involving Air Asia boss Tony FernandesIt is thought that preliminary discussions have taken place between Fernandes and the owners of the club, which was promoted to the Premier League last season. QPR co-owner Bernie Ecclestone, who holds a 62% shareholding in the club, has previously said he may be willing to sell his stake for £100m. It is thought that Ecclestone’s business partner, Flavio Briatore, has an option to buy the shares should Ecclestone want to sell. Briatore and Formula 1 supremo Ecclestone purchased the club in September 2007. Briatore vowed at the time they would be in the Premier League in five years' time. The club’s other shareholder is steel magnate Laskshmi Mittal. It is now understood the Ecclestone and Briatore have given the high-profile Fernandes the go-ahead to purchase the club The football club made a loss of £18.8m in 2008-2009 and £13.7m last year. Fernandes, who is also the Team Lotus F1 boss, is the owner of Air Asia and has previously claimed he made an offer to buy West Ham United. QPR said it did not comment on speculation.
