QPR 1959-1960: QPR playing in Division 3. Just before the start of the season, Alec Stock had just been appointed QPR Manager (coming from Roma and before that Yeovil) (And in his first seven years at QPR, won nothing!) Stock replaced Jack Taylor (1952-1959) QPR finished the season 8th. Top scorer - Brian Bedford, with 25 goals in 44 games. Ron Springett had just gone to Sheff Wed but still trained at QPR Also playing for QPR in 1959-1960: Clive Clark, Ray Drinkwater Tony Ingham, Mike Keen, George Pechy and Jimmy Andrews From The Potted History of QPR "... In 1959 Alec Stock joined the club as a manager, and signed Brian Bedford from Bournemouth, who was to score 180 goals for the club by the end of the 1964/65 season. QPR played at White City again for half a season in 1962 but again poor attendances forced back to Loftus Road. www.qpr.co.uk/page/History/0,,10373,00.html QPR Results for 1959/1960www.soccerbase.com/results2.sd?teamid=2093&seasonid=89Division 3 Tablewww.footballstatisticsresults.co.uk/english_1959_division_3_football_table.html1959/1960 English Football Seaosn - Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1959%E2%80%9360_in_English_footballMaybe the wrong year, but around that time, I think: Yesterday: QPR of Sixty Years Ago, 1940-1950qprreport.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=5426

Kerrins on the Indy Rs board will be in throes of ecstasy at that picture, he must be the only supporter who loves the white shirts.
1959-60 was the season before I started going. Nice to see the old programme style. Watching them at the White City was terrible, amazing structure, but it is hard to imagine anything less suitable for a football club, especially a small one like QPR.
Arguably the best day of my QPR supporting life when they announced they were going back to LR, where the grass had been growing out of the corrugated iron perimeter fence for those two or three grim seasons.
Couldn't imagine the storm that was to descend on us in November 1964 when Gregory arrived, took over as chairman the following season, when we signed Marsh and Allen and charged up the table failing to catch the leaders who were too far ahead, but finishing 3rd.
3rd and 4th in my first two seasons. Stock certainly wrought a transformation.
He signed Brian Bedford for £750, a tiny sum even then, as we sold Clive Clark to West Brom for £16,000, a decision we must have been regretting when he all but singlehandedly destroyed us in the first half at Wembley in 1967.

Brilliant. Note the 3.15 pm kick off. Only two sides kicked off at that time, QPR and Bury. Did I say that already? Bury finished top the following season, we missed out in 3rd.
Hoped to see Bernard Evans on the cover, who joined us from that Tranmere side, and was one of the predators in our Third Division record-breaking 111 goals two years later (we still didn't go up though!)
Our next home league game against Tranmere was the following season (not entirely surprising, I suppose) when we achieved our record score, 9-2. If I was there, I don't remember it (I was 8), although I remember us beating Bury 3-0 (the history books say 3-1 but what do they know).
Did see Hibs beat Clydebank 9-2. They weren't all that convincing either, amazingly enough. Although the scoreline was.

I got one from Toffs via Micky & Vicky Cordwell from the original Club MB about 6 years ago, still wear it too - And fit it!

Its hard to remember individual seasons except after we were so dire in 2nd division, we were just as bad in 50s, and it was sort of like today but sort of simple and lousy and moaning and for me seeing few matches. Brian Bedford changed thingswhen he started scoring in a way we hadnt seen since George Goddard and I think that was Alec Stocks first year and we got bettter results but our attendances were not much better. We had terraces then and Elllerslie Rd was still not rebuilt, but my memory is weak on that. the picture above have done over and over. Defence was led by the forever Ingham and we started to climb table, but that was later, Drinkwater was alright and better than we have now, Petchey was awful. All I can do on that picture is Petchey on right Woods on the far left, Ingham in center and drinkwater on goal. that was last year before we switched to hoops and before Gregory arrived.
Dont see Bedford on that pic came one or two years later, 60 and then we sold him and then he came back. He was always scoring when we went as Cyril Hatton was in 40s and 50s. think that the 4th division startted around 58,59 so we saw northeern teams and had to spend more travelling. I missed those big wins that Ingham saw, Bedford was a scoring machine then we sold him.Always great atmospheres with small crowds. Then it happenned. My family bought QPR. John Bloom the washing machine magnet, first cousin. But then it became a nightmare, and was the shape of things to come a lot later. Then Gregory and Lazarus, well it got better but not on this bit. I know where my relative is but cannot reveal it. Have to get more gigabytes of memory.

Maybe Brian Bedford would solve our problem up front?? I mean he's only 76 isn't he?

Many thanks for the bump. Brings back more memories for me. As I said in one of my episodes, I was at the Galata Saray match in 1950 and I think we won it 5-0. Couldn't remember the date of the game but I see now that it was September 14th 1950 so I would have been 14. Coincidentally that was exactly 7 years to the day before I got married. Good job it was not 1957 otherwise I would have been obliged to postpone the wedding!

Just having areally good trawl through this thread...nostalgia freak that I am. Great Stuff. This was the season we started to play(again) in Blue and White Hoops...Mr Macey in his book got it wrong Well done Andy lonegun for giving some support to those White Shirts..that makes two of us ....and by the way folks the shorts were NAVY BLUE or as near as damn it. Dont believe anyone or any record book that states they were a Chelsea type blue! The 59/60 team was an improvement on my first two seasons 57/58 and 58/59 but to be honest we never really looked Good enough to mount a promotion challenge. Seven year wait for Glory.

Bushman...Well this 11 year old schoolboy did not approve! In the 1950's hooped shirts were considered old fashioned...which is why we changed to a more modern strip of white shirts and navy blue shorts circa 1953 in the first place. The change back to blue and White hoops in 1959 was just a nostalgic whim of new manager Alec Stock...Alec you have a lot to answer for. I will never forgive you!...you fuddy duddy reactionary ;D
