Tony Roberts Hangs Up His Gloves
Posted on: Wed 27 Jul 2011
Goalkeeper Tony Roberts has retired from professional football to take up a full time role as goalkeeping coach at Arsenal Football Club.
The Welshman, 42 in August, hangs up his gloves after 25 years between the sticks and over 500 appearances for the Daggers under his belt.
"I've been putting it off for the last couple of years now. They've (Arsenal) been asking me to go full time for a while. I sat down with John and explained the situation - things have to come to an end.
'Robbo' has been coaching part-time at the Emirates for four years now and during that time has worked his way through the ranks.
"Last year I had the opportunity to work with the first team. Not many opportunities come along where you get offered a fantastic role at one of the world's biggest football clubs.
Robbo's last game for the club came in the 5-0 defeat against Peterborough at London Road on the last day of last season but the Welshman wasn't too disheartened.
"It was never a 5-0 game - we didn't get absolutely battered. It was just a situation where we had to chase the game to get the result we needed. I'd like to have finished on a clean sheet but it wasn't to be.
Roberts played his 500th game for the club last season and he looks back on the landmark with great fondness.
"To play 500 games for anybody is decent. I'm happy - I've been here for 10 seasons and represented my country along the way. There's so much stuff to look back on during my time with Dagenham & Redbridge.
"I want to thank all the fans for their support over the years. We've had some good times, some good games and a laugh. You've just got to keep your support up. We're only a small club from Essex but we've certainly caused a lot of ripples in the football world".
