Sompong out as depleted Thais brace for Palestine
* Published: 22/07/2011 at
Injured striker Sompong Sorleb has pulled out of the Thai team who will face Palestine in a World Cup qualifier in Buri Ram tomorrow, officials said yesterday.
With Sarayuth Chaikamdee ruled out injured, Thailand now have only three forwards _ Teerasil Dangda, Kirati Keawsombut and Wasant Natasant.
Sompong has returned to Bangkok for treatment but Thailand coach Winfried Schaefer said he would not call up another striker.
Defender Anucha Kitpongsri has left the squad, while Teerathorn Boonmathan, another defender, is suspended.
RangsanVivatchaichok has not trained for many days and looks unlikely to be fit for the game, while fellow midfielder Datsakorn Thonglao will return to training today.
"We have several injured players so we will have to change our tactics," Schaefer said.
"Our players must be able to play in different formations because we may play with a 4-5-1 in the first half and a 4-2-2 in the second half."
Tomorrow's first leg of the tie will be Thailand's first competitive game under Schaefer with the second leg scheduled for next Thursday.
The match at I-Mobile stadium kicks off at 6pm and will be shown live on NBT 11.
Teerasil dismisses QPR links
Queens Park Rangers have reportedly offered a trial to Thailand forward Teerasil Dangda, reports in England said yesterday
Teerasil, who will play alongside new signing Robbie Fowler at Muang Thong United, has been told that he has an opportunity to play in the Premier League and will fly in to England to undergo a trial, the reports claimed.
It is understood that Teerasil, who has scored 16 goals in 36 games for his country, will be allowed to leave Muang Thong permanently if a bid of 300,000 is made.
But Teerasil said he knew nothing about it. "I only knew it from the media this morning," he said.
Muang Thong general manager Ronnarit Suewaja said the club had not received any offer from QPR, who are making a return to the English Premier League.
"But I would not be surprised if Teersasil is sought by foreign clubs," he said. "We have some good players and the likes of goalkeeper Kawin Thamasatchanan was linked to Manchester United and Atletico Madrid."
