In some cultures the bride can change her dress many times during the ceremony (which can last all day with various different stages) and a different dress is worn for each stage.
I went to a wedding where the couple were Tamils (can't remember the religion), and we only went to the reception in the evening, but apparently there were several dress changes throughout the day.
