he hype surrounding Raheem Sterling has been rife for a over a year now since his big money move from QPR to Liverpool.

Last February Sterling scored five goals in an FA Youth Cup match against Southend and continues to be one of the most talked about young players at Anfield with comparisons to Liverpool legend John Barnes.

Sterling is one of England Under-17s key players at the Mexico World Cup which started this weekend, and the Liverpool winger put in another impressive performance for the young Three Lions in their opening win against Rwanda on Thursday night.

The diminutive left winger constantly ran at the Rwanda defence and in the first half hit the post and also set up Hallam Hope with a fine cross that the young Evertonian headed against the post.

In the second half the Liverpool starlet continued to torment the Rwanda right back Michel Rusheshangoga who was eventually booked for fouls on Sterling.

England Under-17s goals didn’t come until late in the game. Everton youngster Hallam Hope scoring the opener before Raheem Sterling sealed victory on 89 with a stunning strike that curled into the top corner.

This goal, allied with Sterling’s all-round performance is likely to ratchet up a notch the hype surrounding this 16-year-old and Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish will likely be keeping a keen eye on how he gets on at the World Cup.

Was said at the time we had no power to hold on to him if we wanted to leave.

It happened just before Warnock came.

Now whether we could have tried even harder to keep, offered him more, sold him on the club - and his chance for an early debut in the First team (and a regular place), can't say.
I can't believe we couldn't have kept him - Other clubs have managed.

I guess the BIG question is did we HAVE to sell him? Could we have persuaded him to stay? Could we have FORCED him to stay?

If so, then the money we got was paltry.

Or was it like Dean Parrett sale, when we professed we were helping him, he wanted to go. Whereas to my understanding (which could of course be wrong), we wanted the money. And were eager to shop him. Even to Chelsea.

500,000 pound peanuts. I suppose that the organ grinders monkey, would say that was a good deal, as being a school boy at the time, and not being officially, on the clubs books, there was nothing to stop him signing for Liverpool, and QPR would not have received a cent.

However all considered 500,000 pound would buy a monkey a lot of peanuts.

At his age and not being a QPR fan, there really was no choice to make once Kenny Daglish shook his hand and said he'd like to see him in a Liverpool first team shirt one day.

Good luck to him, if he needs a season on loan anywhere, hopefully he'll choose us, but I see him making it at Liverpool at an early age without needing to.

YOUNG Liverpool star Raheem Sterling has spoken about his wondergoal at the Under-17 World Cup – but says relief was his over-riding emotion.

The 17-year-old starlet, tipped by many as a future star at Anfield, put the seal on England’s 2-0 win over Rwanda in Pachuca on Sunday evening, netting a stunning 30-yard strike after Everton’s Hallam Hope had opened the scoring for John Peacock’s much-fancied side.

The goal was instantly replayed across the internet, with Sterling’s name becoming one of the most popular topics on the social networking site Twitter.

But the pint-sized winger – who joined the Reds from Queens Park Rangers in March of last year, and has been training with Kenny Dalglish’s first-team squad since February – admits he was glad simply to be back playing, having missed much of the European U17 Championships last month due to an ankle problem.

“I thought it was a great team performance today,” said Sterling. “The boys played really well.

“I would like to thank them all for supporting me through a rough patch too, as I haven’t scored for England in a while.

“It was good to get the goal today though and I am really pleased that we started the tournament with a win.”

Sterling and Hope were comfortably England’s most dangerous players in the searing Mexican heat. Both hit the woodwork during a goalless first-half, before the Liverpool man sent his Everton counterpart clear to break the deadlock in the 68th minute.

Sterling’s magical late strike then clinched victory, and the Londoner says he was glad to get his name on the scoresheet.

“It was a bit of a relief to score today,” he added. “I tried to be patient after hitting the post and having a few chances in the first-half.

“But I thought it was coming, waited for my chance to come, and it did and I was grateful for it.”

England will now return to Pachuca on Wednesday evening to face Canada, before completing their Group C campaign against Uruguay in Torreon on Saturday.

A win in either game will secure qualification for the knockout stages, but Sterling is refusing to get overly-confident.

“I am confident, but not over-confident,” he added. “So we will take it step-by-step with our recovery which the coaches have prepared for us.

“We have to take it bit-by-bit as the tournament goes on, and look to get another win against Canada on Wednesday.”

England assistant coach Kenny Swain, meanwhile, says he was glad to see his side get off to a winning start.

“The boys did fantastically,” he said.

“It was always going to be difficult for them in the heat against a tricky side like Rwanda, who provided a good test at times for us. I thought we looked physically strong and handled the heat and high altitude well, it was definitely shown in our performance.”
