he hype surrounding Raheem Sterling has been rife for a over a year now since his big money move from QPR to Liverpool.
Last February Sterling scored five goals in an FA Youth Cup match against Southend and continues to be one of the most talked about young players at Anfield with comparisons to Liverpool legend John Barnes.
Sterling is one of England Under-17s key players at the Mexico World Cup which started this weekend, and the Liverpool winger put in another impressive performance for the young Three Lions in their opening win against Rwanda on Thursday night.
The diminutive left winger constantly ran at the Rwanda defence and in the first half hit the post and also set up Hallam Hope with a fine cross that the young Evertonian headed against the post.
In the second half the Liverpool starlet continued to torment the Rwanda right back Michel Rusheshangoga who was eventually booked for fouls on Sterling.
England Under-17s goals didn’t come until late in the game. Everton youngster Hallam Hope scoring the opener before Raheem Sterling sealed victory on 89 with a stunning strike that curled into the top corner.
This goal, allied with Sterling’s all-round performance is likely to ratchet up a notch the hype surrounding this 16-year-old and Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish will likely be keeping a keen eye on how he gets on at the World Cup.
