Derby County Official Site
Now we can play without pressure, says Rams boss Nigel CloughSaturday, April 16, 2011, NIGEL Clough has urged his Derby County side to play with freedom against runaway Championship leaders Queens Park Rangers on Monday night. The Rams will travel to Loftus Road in high spirits following their 2-1 home win against play-off contenders Leeds United on Tuesday. That result lifted the Rams 11 points clear of the relegation zone and now they prepare to take on Neil Warnock's QPR, who are on the verge of clinching promotion to the Premier League. "The result against Leeds on Tuesday should allow us to relax and play with a little bit more freedom at QPR," said Clough. "We can go there and try to be as positive as we can be and see how we measure up against them. "For us, it's now all about sending out the right message in the final games as we look ahead to next season. "We would like to bring in five or six players and show that we intend to give it a go next season. "QPR should give us hope for next season. Last year they finished just above us and now they are top, and deservedly so. "Neil Warnock has a formula for success, which usually means a solid back four, an abundance of strikers and a bit of creativity in midfield and it obviously works. "When you have got the kind of options they have, then it can make a big difference. "They brought in a lot of players last summer and they have shown what can be achieved. But, hopefully, we can delay their party on Monday night." There are no fresh injury concerns for Clough going into the Loftus Road encounter, which will be shown live on Sky Sports. Gareth Roberts, who made a surprise return from a knee injury in the win against Leeds, did not train yesterday as a precaution but is expected to be available against QPR. "Gareth made a big difference to the balance of the team against Leeds," Clough added. "Having him at left-back meant we were able to move John Brayford back to right-back and that helped us look more solid. "Coming back so soon also highlighted Gaz's character, when medically perhaps he shouldn't have played." Stephen Pearson set up both Rams' goals in the win against Leeds but Clough says he has a dilemma when it comes to team selection. "Stephen would rather play in central midfield, while we think he can do a job out wide on the left," said Clough. www.therams.co.uk/news/play-pressure/article-3455890-detail/article.html

Then too, they were managed by a Clough! (In his first or second season)
The only team to do the Double over us that year (4-0 at the Baseball Ground, I think)

For years, for QPR that was the norm...Just one of the idiosyncracies that made QPR so special

QPR defender set to miss Derby clashFITZ Hall will probably not be risked against the Rams on Monday night as Neil Warnock looks likely to turn once more to the central pairing of Matt Connolly and Kaspars Gorkss. Hall pulled out of the game at Barnsley in midweek with a groin strain following a morning fitness test and Connolly, although low on confidence according to the QPR boss only a week ago, was given his first start since the trip to Preston in mid-February. "It was nice to see them both come in and do well," said Warnock, whose faith was repaid with a clean sheet and which has paved the way for a potential promotion party on Monday night, if other results go their way at the weekend. "I think that was Gorkss' best display of the season and Connolly has had a very difficult time with a loss of confidence, but I've no doubt about him again now." Heidar Helguson has been antibiotics and taken some time off training after picking up facial and leg wounds at Barnsley, but is expected to be OK. www.fulhamchronicle.co.uk/london-sport/london-qpr/2011/04/16/qpr-defender-set-to-miss-derby-clash-82029-28532825/#ixzz1JhGmQ1vQ

Played or Managed Both Teams include:...Tommy Docherty and Jim Smith - Don Masson Leighton James Lee Camp And of course, didn't have a medical Dean SturridgeFrom Clive Whittingham's 2006 Interview with Gianni Paladini CW: Speaking of thirty plus year olds looking for a pay day, I want to talk about Dean Sturridge, well I don't but I suppose we better discuss it. Did Dean Sturridge go through a medical examination before signing for the club? GP: Well last season, at the time we were still in with a chance of making the play offs with a good run. Ian Holloway wanted Hayles from Millwall but we couldn't get him, so we had a report about Sturridge and Holloway was keen to get him signed up. I tried to do a deal with Wolves, you know their guy Moxey, to get him on loan until the end of the season, three months. This seemed fine but then at the last minute I got a call very early in the morning saying Dean wouldn't come on loan unless he got a deal for another year afterwards. I spoke to Jim Smith (Sturridge's manager at Derby) and he highly recommended against it. He said if we signed him for a year he'll waste our money. Jim says you need to keep Sturridge hungry. Holloway wanted him though, the transfer deadline was getting close so the pressure was on to get a deal done. We spoke to Wolves' medical people about him and they said we could put him right. There was nothing major wrong with him and we'd be able to sort him out. I took him to Italy and everywhere trying to get him fit, it was no good. CW: So did he have a medical before he signed?
GP: No. CW: How much has Dean Sturridge cost us over the last 18 months? GP: One hundred and eighty thousand pounds. We've made him offers to end the deal and get rid of him but he doesn't want to know. We offered him fifty thousand in January and he turned it down. His contract finishes next month, he'll be gone. .." Clive Whittingham's complete 2006 Interview with Paladini here - always interesting to reread - www.fansnetwork.co.uk/football/queensparkrangers/fb_news.php?storyid=3363 "...All the agents' payments are understood to have been registered with the League, as required by the rules, except one, £10,000 paid to Paladini's close friend Mel Eves when QPR signed Dean Sturridge from Wolves. Paladini explained that Eves was acting for QPR as a dealmaker and so the payment did not need to be registered..." Derby draw was like winning a cup - WarnockApr 17 2011 NEIL Warnock admitted the draw at Derby was a key moment in QPR's season. Tomorrow's visit of the Rams brings back happy memories for Rangers, who rescued a lost cause to draw 2-2 at Pride Park in August. "I think it was the main moment of the season," Warnock said. "I think it turned everything around in the space of three minutes. We were outplayed on the day and the players went from being disappointed, miserable and doubting themselves to believing we could come back against anybody if we keep going. "It was like we'd won the cup. All the substitutes were up hugging each other, even if was a bit early in the season to be doing that." www.fulhamchronicle.co.uk/london-sport/london-qpr/2011/04/17/derby-draw-was-like-winning-a-cup-warnock-82029-28532844/

hall is injured well i never! When I first saw the title to this thread I had to click on it to see if Hall was actually injured or if it was actually an accurate description of his performances this season! In fairness he's had a decent run lately and played well enough to be first choice along with Gorkss, but it's the Hull game that is the most important in terms of the next two so if he is a risk then rest him for Derby in the hope he's match fit for Hull if needs be. That's the general consensus here as well. Jaime Mackie played such an important part to our season and it makes me proud to be a fellow supporter when his name is sung by the crowd every game even though he hasn't played since January. Rangers fans who do and Jaime Mackie: I salute you!

BBC TEAM NEWS QPR manager Neil Warnock is expected to name an unchanged line-up. Matt Connolly, brought back into the side for Tuesday's win at Barnsley, looks likely to retain his place. Derby County expect Stephen Pearson, who limped off with a knee injury against Leeds, to be passed fit for the game at Loftus Road. Gareth Roberts and Shaun Barker are set to feature despite missing training, while boss Nigel Clough has hinted that Alberto Bueno will be recalled. MATCH PREVIEW A win for leaders Queens Park Rangers on Monday would mean that if Norwich do not win Thursday's East Anglian derby against Ipswich, the west London club will celebrate promotion and a return to the Premier League after a 15-year absence. Rangers are overwhelmingly confident they will not be docked points following FA charges related to their signing of Alejandro Faurlin and the Argentine's subsequent contract extension. And after winning seven of their last nine games, they will also feel confident of getting the victory they need to take a step closer to the title. Derby are not yet safe from relegation but are close to it after beating Leeds 2-1 last time out. The Rams have an excellent record at Loftus Road, where QPR have only beaten them four times in the league and last beat them in September 1982 - the season the R's last won promotion to the top flight. The task facing Nigel Clough's side is underlined by the fact that, despite recently being thumped 4-1 by Sc**thorpe, Rangers have the best defensive record in the entire Football League. Neil Warnock's men have conceded a mere 27 league goals this season and have kept an unrivalled 23 clean sheets. MATCH FACTS Head-to-head •The majority of matches between these clubs have been drawn. Seventeen of them have ended level, with Derby winning 16 of the rest and QPR 12. •Derby are unbeaten in nine away matches against the R's. Queens Park Rangers •QPR have lost only two of their last 17 league matches, and are unbeaten in nine at home. •A goal for Tommy Smith would be the 100th of his career, while Heidar Helguson is two away from his 100th league goal. •Smith is set to face his former club, and so too could Rob Hulse. Derby •Derby are averaging a point per game in 2011, having taken 18 points from 18 matches since the turn of the year. •They have scored an average of a goal per away game this season (20 in 20). •Their 53 goals this term have been shared between 19 different scorers. news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/13032172.stm

Derby Official Site Clough Braced For QPR Challenge Posted on: Mon 18 Apr 2011 Nigel Clough has kept a watchful eye on Queens Park Rangers' transformation from a bottom half Championship side to Champions-elect inside a year. Neil Warnock's men are on the brink of promotion to the Premier League and are just two wins away from a return to the top flight after a remarkable season. Clough believes much of Rangers' success is down to the acquisition of experienced Championship players, which is something he is looking to bring into his squad this summer. "QPR are a good example to look at when we start the work of rebuilding for next season," he told Rams Player. "Last season they finished in the bottom half - with a strong finish - and now they are set to be the Champions of the division. "What they have done is brought in good, established Championship players. "In the last few weeks we have stated that is something we need to do over the summer. "They have good, solid defenders and then some real quality going forwards, so you can see why they are where they are. "Neil has options too, which is a big thing to have in this division. "Can we make the sort of progress QPR have by going from mid-table to a top-six side? That is what we want to do. "We need to bring in some players with a good few years of Championship experience behind them to complement the youngsters we have." Clough says it is a matter of 'when' and not 'if' Rangers secure their promotion. Derby are eight points clear of the bottom three and Clough says there is still work to do before safety is assured. "They are well clear at the top and I think they've done enough now," he said. "For us, I think the gap does take a bit of pressure off but after the weekend's results we still have some work to do. "We want be as positive as we can and try and finish on a high note." The reverse fixture between the two sides back in August at Pride Park ended in dramatic fashion. Rangers struck twice in injury time to snatch a point in a thrilling 2-2 draw and leave Derby devastated. "We were extremely unfortunate not to win that game," said Clough. "To concede two in stoppage time hurt a lot. "QPR have grown a lot during the season, and coming back from 2-0 down in injury time will have been a massive confidence boost for them." www.dcfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10270~2341116,00.html
