The ground I spent most time at between 1980 and 1988 was also a venue for the 1948 Olympic footy. Green Pond Road, Walthamstow. It held 20,000 (mostly standing), one of the best non-league grounds in the country even when it was demolished.

Artist Elliott Brook with his creation. Goaloids on Shepherds Bush Green. Artist Elliott Brook with his creation. MUCH of it resembles a quarry and is inaccessible to the public, but one corner of Shepherd’s Bush Green is causing a ripple of interest after two sculptures were installed to mark the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Two 41ft ‘Goaloids’ have been put up on the western side of the Green to mark the 1908 success of the British Olympic football team, which won gold when the Games were held at White City. The sculptures, by QPR fan Elliott Brook, a former Shepherd’s Bush resident, are helping to brighten the green while it is refurbished. They are made of sets of goalposts on rotating car turntables, which revolve one way for 45 minutes then the opposite way to mark the duration of two halves of a football match. Mr Brook, who has been in a wheelchair since suffering a stroke in 2007, says he hopes the council will keep the designs there as a permanent reminder of the 2012 Games. They are due to be taken down in September. He said: “People seem to like them and I’m hoping they can stay up as a legacy of these Games.” Mr Brook was inspired after hearing about the regeneration plans and learning that the green was the site of the 1908 football final. He said: “I was driving round there one day and realised what a focal point it is for the area. Traffic can see the green from all sides, making it a perfect place for a sculpture, especially as it’s being smartened up. “I never realised the green had hosted matches for the 1908 Games and with QPR, Shepherd’s Bush has got a real sporting history. It’s a special place.
