Iron swoop for former FA Cup hero Roy EssandohThursday 31st March 2011 Braintree Town have bolstered their attacking options by signing former FA Cup hero Roy Essandoh and ex-QPR star Kevin Gallen. Essandoh, 35, has just become a free agent after leaving St Neots Town. Belfast-born Essandoh is well-known for his FA Cup exploits in 2001. He shot to prominence after his agent responded to an appeal on Ceefax, by Wycombe Wanderers manager Lawrie Sanchez. Sanchez was on the look-out for a new striker and decided to take a punt on Essandoh, who had previously played for Motherwell, East Fife and in Finland. He then came on as a substitute and scored a last-minute winner in an FA Cup quarter-final against Leicester. However, Essandoh was released at the end of his first season in English football and has since spent time at Barnet, Cambridge City, Grays Athletic, Bishop’s Stortford, Billericay Town, Gravesend and Northfleet and Kettering Town. Now he has arrived at Braintree and Stringer told the Gazette: “We’re very happy to have signed Roy. “He might not be the quickest now but he’s still strong and fit. “He’s got plenty of experience and he’ll give us a presence. “It’s also important to have more back-up in terms of our strikers because, as everyone knows, we’re a bit light in that department.” Stringer had been keen to add to his attacking options before the transfer window closed today. “I had one or two things in the pipeline but nothing else came off,” he said. “One of them was Stefan Payne, who was recently on loan with us from Gillingham. “However, they weren’t prepared to let him go out again. “It’s a shame but we’re very happy with Roy. “He’s an extra body and we’ll go into the last few games with the squad we’ve got now. Hopefully it’ll be good enough.” Stringer has also completed the signing of the vastly experienced Gallen, who has also played for the likes of Huddersfield Town and Barnsley. Gallen has recently been playing non-league football for Luton Town, in the Blue Square Bet Premier. Braintree only have a one-point lead at the top of the Blue Square Bet South table, heading into Saturday’s home match with Dorchester. Farnborough, who entertain Bromley, turned up the heat by winning 4-2 at Boreham Wood on Tuesday. www.braintreeandwithamtimes.co.uk/sport/8947005.Iron_swoop_for_former_FA_Cup_hero_Roy_Essandoh/

Braintree Town Official Site TWO DEADLINE DAY SIGNINGS Stringers moves to bring in - two experienced strikers Braintree Town manager Rod Stringer has made two deadline day signings to boost his squad for the remainder of the season. Joining the Club are strikers Roy Essandoh from St. Neots Town and Kevin Gallen from Luton Town. Roy is well known to the Iron faithful after his spells at near neighbours Bishop's Stortford. Roy, who is 35, started his career in Scotland with Motherwell before moving on to Rushden & Diamonds, Wycombe Wanderers, Barnet and Gravesend & Northfleet. In 2005 he joined Bishop's Stortford and played almost 150 games for the Woodside Park club, scoring 62 goals, before switching to St Neots Town this season. Kevin started his career at Queen's Park Rangers and made over 170 appearances, scoring 36 goals, for the Loftus Road club before spells at Huddersfield and Barnsley in 2000/01. In his first spell at QPR Kevin, who is also 35, played three games for England Under 21s. He then returned to Loftus Road in 2001 for another six seasons, making a further 194 appearances and scoring 54 goals, before spells at Plymouth Argyle and MK Dons. He switched to Luton Town in 2009 and made 67 appearances at Kenilworth Road, scoring 19 goals, and has also had a seven game spell at Barnet this season on loan. Iron Manager Rod Stringer was delighted with his latest additions: "Both lads have proven pedigrees at a higher level, know where the back of the net is and have got the experience we need for the final part of the season. They had a number of options, but I'm delighted they've both chosen to join us at Braintree." www.braintreetownfc.org.uk/news.html

Kevin Gallen made his Braintree debut. They Drew. Gallen didnt score Essex Chronicle "...Leaders Braintree Town remain at the top despite a stuttering 1-1 draw at home to Dorchester Town. Former QPR forward Kevin Gallen made his debut for the Iron but even his presence in the starting line-up couldn't inspire Braintree. However they did take the lead at Cressing Road with a fine flowing move which ended with Cliff Akurang firing in a fine left foot half volley (20). Chances came and went though for the hosts and Dorchester produced a sucker punch when Ryan Moss (87) finished well past Nathan McDonald as Rod Stringer's men looked to close out the three points. Braintee are still at the top, just by a point though, after Farnborough, could only muster a 2-2 draw at home to Bromley. www.thisistotalessex.co.uk/sport/FOOTBALL-ROUND-Clarets-fightback-Iron-stutter-draw/article-3403591-detail/article.html

Braintree Town Official Site IRON HELD BUT STILL TOP Late leveller - denies three points Braintree Town remain a point clear at the top of the table, with six games to play, after a hard fought draw with visitors Dorchester Town at Cressing Road. Iron dominated the first half and, after eight minutes, Brad Quinton broke on the left before cutting the ball back to the unmarked Glenn Poole, who saw his effort well saved by Dorchester keeper Dan Thomas. After 18 minutes a Quinton corner on the right found Adam Bailey Dennis unmarked, but the Braintree centre half saw his header dip just over. Braintree took the lead two minutes later. A sweeping move from their own half saw Matt Paine feed Jai Reason, who switched the ball to Cliff Akurang on the left. The Braintree striker took one touch before volleying the ball past Thamas from the edge of the box. After 22 minutes Poole's corner was pulled back to Kenny Davis who's shot from the edge of the box skipped just past the post and, moments later, Quinton released Reason in space behind the Dorchester defence, but the Braintree midfielder shot wide of the target. Dorchester's best first half effort was a 36th minute corner from Chris Flood that found Reece Connolly unmarked at the far post, but he headed wide. Just before the break Kevin Gallen nodded on to Quinton, who's shot from 25 yards brought an excellent save from Thomas. The second half saw Braintree in control for lengthy periods, but fail to add the killer second goal. After 48 minutes Glenn Poole unlocked the Dorchester offside trap on the left. Breaking to the penalty area he saw his snap shot well saved by Thomas and the Dorchester keeper was quickly up on his toes to deny Quinton's follow-up. After 68 minutes Akurang tested Thomas with an inch-perfect lob from all of 25 yards but Thomas was equal to it. A series of substitutions saw the game lose momentum late on and Dorchester grabbed an unlikely equaliser with two minutes remaining. Ryan Moss cut inside his man and tucked the ball past Braintree keeper Nathan McDonald from the edge of the box. Teams: Braintree Town: McDonald, Starkey, Peters (Lechmere 65), Bailey-Dennis, Paine, Quinton, Akurang, Reason, Davis, Gallen (Pinney 61), Poole (Symons 75). Un-used subs: Marks, Shulton. Dorchester Town: Thomas, Symes, Martin, Jermyn, Walker, Bowles, Coutts (Crittenden 75), Connolly, Moss, Flood (Bergquist 70), Devlin. Un-used subs: Taylor, Gleeson, Coward. Referee: C. Fitch. Attendance: 561. www.braintreetownfc.org.uk/news.html

Because Kevin was a popular player here for most part. I know there were a few whom didn't like him. But his heart was always in the right place.

And in the realm of non-league...Moving on to Witney United (still waiting...!) Non League Daily
WITNEY PITCH DAMAGED AGAIN05/04/2011 Once again, Uhlsport Hellenic League side Witney United have been the target of mindless vandalism at their Marriott's Stadium site. During the Christmas period, the pitch was damaged by mindless individuals who had broken into the site, and driven all over the pitch. Yesterday (4th April) it was discovered that the same thing had happened again. Steve Lake of WUFC stated: "I cannot believe why people would even think of doing this. We have had individuals who come to the ground drive around like maniacs and make a mess of our gravel car park - but to break in and drive and 'doughnut' all over the pitch is just heartbreaking." Lake went on to state: "Last summer we spent a small fortune to ensure we had a good surface at Marriott's Stadium. The early summer was very dry and so we also had a huge watering bill and so to have people do these kind of things is seriously disappointing and demoralising." Anyone that has any information regarding this incident should, confidentially, contact the club or the Police at Witney. www.nonleaguedaily.com/news/index.php?newsmode=FULL&nid=74617
