’Kelly tribute to QPR stars
By Steve Hossack Doncaster Rovers Published on Thursday 17 March 2011 04:48 DONCASTER Rovers will face arguably their toughest Championship game of the season at the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday at home to leaders Queens Park Rangers.
“They remind me a lot of Newcastle last year,” said Rovers No 2 Richard O’Kelly.“They are very organised, are streetwise and know what they are doing, and they have also got a bit of unpredictibility with Adel Taarabt. They’ve also got the goals of Heidar Helguson They’ve added to that with Wayne Routledge.” “Whoever plays in the back-four, everyone of them is a good defender, and in their captain, Shaun Derry, they’ve got somebody who has been there, seen it, done it and knows what it is about. “Within the spine of the team they’ve also got keeper Paddy Kenny and Kaspars Gorkss so it is very experienced. They’ve all been there before in this situation and I would imagine that they are quite influential among the rest of the players, so they’ve got what it takes to get the job done. “Unless they are handed a points deduction, I think that they’ll hang on to top spot. “I think that they are playing with that much confidence I couldn’t imagine them going anywhere and sitting back and looking to try and catch teams on the break. “If they come to the Keepmoat and sit back then they might as well not play Taarabt and Routledge and people like that; they’d be better leaving them on the bench. Taarabt will arrive at the Keepmoat Stadium as Rangers’ top scorer with 15 goals. “He’s a talented boy,”said O’Kelly. “He’s added a bit of consistency to his game this year. I think the rest of the team have helped him by their outlook towards him and the way they support him. “Occasionally when what he does doesn’t come off, players like Taarabt can then be a liability. But the rest of the team are very supportive and encourage him to do what he does. Every individual in a team needs people around them. “Every time we’ve played them in this division he’s always a player that we’ve have to look out for.” n The Rovers Supporters’ Club are hosting fund-raising Night at the Races at the Toad Brewery (across from stadium car park 3) tomorrow night at 7.30pm. Admission is free and everyone welcome. All proceeds will be donated to the NSPCC. www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/doncaster/o_kelly_tribute_to_qpr_stars_1_3187425

at this time of year; sometimes a match against a mid table club is better than a relegation zone club imo.

Gazette/Yann Tear Routledge is only QPR doubt for Doncaster WAYNE Routledge's ankle has been the only source of concern for Neil Warnock this week ahead of Saturday's trip to Doncaster Rovers. The winger (pictured) complained of pain in the joint on Monday and was withdrawn from training until today (Thursday) as a precaution. Providing he comes through the session unscathed, the QPR boss will have only one other decision to make - whether to reinstate Danny Shittu in place of Kaspars Gorkss in central defence now the Nigerian has completed a one match ban for the red card picked up at Millwall. “I'm not going to make a decision about that until nearer the time,” said the QPR boss. “It's good that I've got all of them on form now. They all look sharp.” Fitz Hall is fine, Warnock saying he was not even aware the defender was limping at the end of the first half against Crystal Palace last Saturday. Rangers should not be too concerned by the fact they have only ever won once at Doncaster – and that was in the very first meeting between the sides in the north 60 years ago. The Rs have lost on their last three visits and have never scored in the Keepmoat Stadium, but the teams' paths have only crossed on 13 occasions. Two Kaspars Gorkss goals and an Adel Taarabt penalty sent 17th placed Rovers away with a 3-0 defeat when the sides met at Loftus Road in September. www.uxbridgegazette.co.uk/west-london-sport/qpr/2011/03/17/routledge-is-only-qpr-doubt-for-doncaster-64767-28354345/

BBC - Doncaster v QPR
TEAM NEWS John Oster and goalkeeper Neil Sullivan will both return to the Doncaster squad after their respective injuries. But Joe Mills (foot), James Chambers (hamstring), James O'Connor (foot), Mustapha Dumbuya (knee) and top scorer Billy Sharp (groin) remain sidelined. QPR will give a fitness test to Wayne Routledge, who picked up an ankle injury in training this week. Fitz Hall seems to have shaken off a knock, while Dan Shittu is available again after serving a suspension. MATCH PREVIEW QPR are overwhelmingly confident they will not be docked points after recently being hit with Football Association charges relating to their signing of Argentine midfielder Alejandro Faurlin. And they can head to the Keepmoat Stadium with plenty of confidence given their recent form and injury-hit Doncaster's slide towards a relegation battle. Rangers, who have not been out of the automatic promotion places all season, are seven points clear at the top and 10 clear of third-placed Swansea. Another win on Saturday would be their fifth victory in six matches, and their 21st of the season. Doncaster were part of the promotion race themselves at the end of 2010. They were one place outside of the play-off zone in December, but are now alarmingly close to the drop zone after a run of only one win in 10 matches. MATCH FACTS Head-to-head • Doncaster and QPR have each won six of their 13 previous league matches between these clubs. • QPR won 2-0 on the club's first visit to Rovers, in April 1951, but have only taken a total of one point from their five subsequent trips. Doncaster • Having conceded 66 goals in 37 Championship games, Doncaster have the joint worst defensive record in the division. • Rovers have picked up only two points from the last possible 12 at home. • A win would give the Yorkshire club their 300th league point under manager Sean O'Driscoll. Queens Park Rangers • QPR boast the best defensive record in the Championship, having conceded fewer goals (23) and kept more clean sheets (20) than any other team. • They have won 14 matches this season by two or more goals. • A goal for Tommy Smith would be the 100th of the forward's career. news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_div_1/9425787.stm

SEAN: TAARABT IS KEYDoncaster Rovers are preparing themselves for a massive clash against top-of-the-table Queens Park Rangers this weekend, with the aim of halting what appears to be a march towards the Premier League for the London side. Rovers go into the clash off the back of a fantastic draw against another promotion contender in Nottingham Forest last weekend, but Doncaster manager Sean O'Driscoll anticipates something very different from Saturday's Championship opponents at the Keepmoat Stadium. "In a division as tight as the Championship, to go ten points clear and concede twenty-three goals - if you're at the top of the table by ten points, then all of the stats will add up to that," said O'Driscoll ahead of the clash against QPR. "But to concede only 23 goals and to score probably more goals than anybody else - and have a player like Adel Taarabt, who they have really tried to nurture, then you have to say that they are doing something right." And O'Driscoll goes on to emphasise the importance of QPR's talismanic skipper, who has been tipped to win many of the Championship Player of the Year accolades. "We're not very good at nurturing talented players in English football," says the Rovers manager. "It always seems to be 'he can't do this' or 'he can't do that', instead of looking at the positives and admitting that the boy's got undoubted ability. He's just trying to add a bit of responsibility to that and I think that the QPR team, the players that play with him and the staff - the management - have done a really good job with him. He's never going to be a tackler or a header or a player who tracks back, but he plays with responsibility and the games that he has been brilliant in are the games where they want him to do the special things - and that makes a difference." "He's arguably one of the best or the best player in the division." With Swansea City sitting in second place in the league - ten points behind QPR - it's understandable why it looks as though the R's could be taking on the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal next season. "They've ticked a lot of boxes. And if you are going to put together a team in the Championship that is going to be successful, then they need to defend when they need to and attack when they need to. They're there on merit, not luck - they are there because they are the best team in the division and it will be a difficult game for us on Saturday." www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk/page/News/0,,10329~2319434,00.html

The Star
We don’t fear the leadersINFLUENTIAL midfielder John Oster is set to return to action in today’s Championship clash against league leaders Queens Park Rangers at the Keepmoat Stadium. Oster, who had been a virtual ever-present before picking up the injury a couple of weeks ago, is fit again after recovering from a calf strain. Despite the fact that Rangers will start the game seven points clear at the top, they hold no fears for Oster. “I know that they beat us 3-0 at Loftus Road in September but I don’t think that it was a true reflection of the game,” he said. “They scored from two setpieces and a penalty but I felt that during open play it was pretty even and we didn’t do a great deal wrong. “It was a strange one because we felt that we had done well against a team that was top of the league yet it looks like we got a 3-0 hammering, which wasn’t the case. “But if we perform like we did down there then I don’t think that we will fall too short in today’s game. He added: “They’ve made one or two additions to their side, and made several signings in the January transfer window, so they’ve definitely strengthened their squad. “ They seem to play a little bit differently. They are probably a little bit different. They are more of a 4-4-1-1 whereas they were more of a 4-3-3 back when we played them. So, as I say, they are a little bit different but whatever they are doing it seems to be working for them. “They’ve been very consistent all season and they’ve not had a blip. If they lost a game they put it right the next game and I don’t think that they have had back-to-back defeats all season. “They’ve got a lot of experience as well as having younger players and they’ve also brought in players of Premiership quality as well. “The manager has got the right blend. He’s got the defence very solid and they routinely score plenty of goals so all in all they are a pretty strong outfit. “Having said that. I don’t think that they are the best team in the league, but it’s all about personal opinions.
“I’d go for Swansea because of the way they play. They are certainly the most effective team in the league, that is for sure. “I’m sure that they won’t have played well in a lot of their games this season, but they’ve won a lot of games, which is what Newcastle did when winning the league last year. “Adel Taarabt has been getting a lot of publicity and he’s a good player. A lot of their play goes through him and he’s creating chances for other people or scoring himself.” www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/doncaster/we_don_t_fear_the_leaders_1_3198768
