Update: Should definitely check to confirm dates, etc. And when deadline is for signing up.
Sunday 12th June - Male 'Man on the Run' 11.00 am start
Sunday 26th June - Female 'Race for Life' 11.00 am start
Both same course Hampton (Herne Bay)-Swalecliffe and back along the sea front both ways. Dad's dying wish for more runners This is Kent/Jan Thom Inspirational: Neil Roberts with his wife Becky and son Charlie THE grieving widow of brave dad Neil Roberts, who ran to raise money for Cancer Research despite his own terminal diagnosis, has called for massive local support for this year's event. Neil, 53, died peacefully at his home in Peartree Road, Broomfield, Herne Bay, on Saturday following his gruelling illness. His wife Becky and daughters Hayley, 23, and Claire, 20, from his first marriage, were at his bedside. Now Becky, 29, is hoping Neil's death will act as a spur to local men to back this year's Man On The Run Race For Life at Hampton, Herne Bay, on June 26. Click here for more Neil was bitterly disappointed that so few men took part last year. He said at the time: "I crossed the finish line in tears. I've done the race four times before and when I found out I was ill it made me more determined to take part. But what struck me was how few people made the effort and gave up an hour of their time. There were only about 300 runners which is less than one per cent of the population of Herne Bay." Becky said: "Neil was so determined to make people more aware of the race and wanted the number of people taking part to at least double this year. "He had wanted to take part again but when he realised he couldn't he just wanted to do everything he could promote it. "It will be the biggest tribute to him if it is better supported this June." Neil was a lifelong Queens Park Rangers fan and founder of the club's supporters group. Becky and Neil were VIP guests at Loftus Road in January when Neil met his idol Stan Bowles. Neil, who married Becky three years ago, was diagnosed with Cancer of the oesophagus in May. Becky said medics had initially dismissed his symptoms as stress. He endured a round of chemotherapy but a second course made him too ill to continue. Becky said: "It just knocked him out, it wasn't worth it." Neil and Becky's son Charlie is now 15 months old. The funeral service will be at Barham Crematorium at 12.40pm on Monday, March 7. Family flowers only but donations to Demelza through A Welch and Sons, 94 Station Road, Herne Bay, or call 01227 374995. Applications for the Man on the Run event – which promotes awareness of male Cancers – on Sunday June 26 can be made through the Cancer Research UK website at www.manontherun.orgwww.thisiskent.co.uk/where/hernebay/Dad-s-dying-wish-runners/article-3253254-detail/article.html

Firstly, let me just say that I never met Neil, & I have already agreed to run this years London Marathon for another charity; Battersea Dogs Home, but I can say that I will run the London Marathon in honour of Neil & other brave souls that are no longer with us. Also, wouldnt it be a nice touch if we could all between us across all of the boards get a good turnout down to this event, Herne Bay is not far from London & all run in our QPR shirts in honour of Neil ? Only a suggestion, but surely it would be a good way to support a very worthy charity & a mark of respect for one of our own, people would be trying to work out all these QPR fans running around Herne Bay ?! & Anyone can do a 5K, no excuses.

Any QPR fans taking part should of course be wearing their QPR jersey as a sign of acknowledgement for Neil.

Have signed up for the run, those who know me might want to be waiting by the finish with Oxygen, 20 B & H and copious amounts of beer...... Hoping to make it to the funeral as well. Looking at the picture in this article (which I guess was taken last June) makes me realise just how quickly Robbo went downhill after he was diagnosed. Bloody sad.....

Have been following all re' Neil with great interest and sadness, as when I started teaching PE in Herne Bay(1972) Neil was in Year 10 ( then known as 4th year!) I can just about recall Neil-mainly through the fact that he was the first other QPR supporter that I had met in Herne Bay ! I read the article in the local paper last summer after the 'Man on the Run' event but even then hadn't realised this was the same Neil Roberts that I had taught about 37 years earlier! I'm still in contact with some of Neil's former classmates who are planning to attend his funeral and had also met up with him at Herne Bay FC in recent times. The idea of running in his memory in QPR shirts sounds brilliant to me and will look great along the promenade route. It would be great to boost the numbers which have struggled in comparison to the 1000's that run/walk the women's 'Race for Life' over the same route. But most importantly it would be a great tribute to Neil himself ! I really hope that the idea gains momentum and that Neil's wishes are met.-it would be very fitting!

Sorry but there is some confusion re the 5 K run/walk. The details from MacMoish are for the Race For Life which is the Womens Run over the same course-26th June. However, the Men's run is on the 12th June and is called 'Man on the Run'. Men cannot enter the Race for Life ! The run is over the same course though !

Thanks for correcting/clarifying...
I apologize for my confusion/posting
Edit: So to clarify (I think): if you're male, you can express your support on one date. If you're a female, you can express your support on onother date in June

Yes that's it ! Sunday 12th June Male event 'Man on the Run' 11.00 am start Sunday 26th June Female event 'Race for Life' 11.00 am start Both same course Hampton (Herne Bay)-Swalecliffe and back along the sea front both ways. Entry forms for 'Man on the Run' can be downloaded from www.manontherun.org or e mail sarah@manontherun.org for further datails or for a form to be sent. Proceeds go to Cancer ResearchUK. Entry fee was £10 last year and £5 for Under 18's. Both events are to raise awareness of different forms of Cancer and therefore many of the runners run in memory of loved ones who have suffered from Cancer. I hope this information helps anyone intending to run in support of 'Robbo'.

Thanks for posting Becky. Neil was only a member on this board for 6 short months, but he had a massive impact on many users. Some of us were lucky enough to meet Neil in the Addy and I am sure we were all deeply touched my him. I am so happy that he managed to meet Stan at the Coventry match. Something that he very much deserved..... I look forward to meeting you and Charlie at the run in June, I guess your car will be the one with the QPRReport car sticker. Regards and deepest sympathy, Harry.

Whilst I didn't know Neil that well other than buying away tickets when he ran the Supporters Club, some of my mates did know Neil quite well. The last time I had contact with Neil was at Yeading several years ago when QPR played a Friendly there and me, Neil and my mate (Lennie) had a drink in the bar. My girlfriend's parents live in Whitstable so we will travel down for that weekend. I am now going to dig out the running trainers (and QPR shirt) and will hopefully take part in this event.

Really enjoyed the race yesterday, a beautiful, beautiful day. Came home in 2 hours 49 minutes, no great drama's in the race, last 6 miles were tough, that's a given, but you just have to get your head down. Pretty pleased with my efforts.

When you see a guy like this running the Marathon, its a pretty humbling experience......
Inspirational Human Being.
A few thoughts from yesterday; looking back on it, I ran a very mature adult race, at no point was I running FAST, I held my nerve & got things right on the day, pre race nervous tension & negative energy had gone by about mile 4, I was starting to feel it by about mile 8, starting to have those thoughts of self doubt that I was in for a tough day, but it didnt come on top & the middle section of the race was my strongest, last 10k from the top of the Isle Of Dogs back in to town was tough, quite hard to explain exactly how tough, your legs are so tight by that point, but I made it home, I did well yesterday.
God Bless Neil Roberts & all our Friends that are no longer with us.
