Bryan Robson's boys were determined to bounce back against lowly QPR after their 4-0 thrashing at Nottingham Forest on Sunday but a devastating spell of four goals in 13 first-half minutes sent them packing. On 32 minutes Rangers snatched the lead with a freak goal. Mark Kennedy's cross looked like being easily cleared by defender Steve Vickers but his swipe at the ball saw it hook behind him and over Andy Dibble's head into the net. That seemed to spur Rangers and five minutes later it was two in equally bizarre circumstances. Early substitute Paul Bruce hit a ball in from the left touchline which took a slight deflection and flew into the top corner. There was no fluke about the third a minute later. Kennedy's superb 30-yard pass found Kevin Gallen who rounded the keeper before expertly shooting through a crowd of players. Mike Sheron grabbed the fourth right on half time when Gallen nipped the ball through for him to curl a shot past Dibble from 20 yards. Robson took off Michael Thomas, Nigel Pearson and Craig Hignett at half-time, bringing on Mikkel Beck and Alun Armstrong to form a four-man attack. It was a bold move and it almost paid off a minute into the second half when Paul Merson's corner was headed on by Beck only for David Bardsley to head it against the crossbar and away. They soon paid for their adventure though when Rangers grabbed a fifth on 53 minutes. Kennedy got down the left and his cross was perfect for Sheron to head home his second goal. The frustration was setting in for Boro and on 64 minutes Andy Townsend paid the price. Just 20 seconds after being booked for a tussle with Gallen he tripped Nigel Quashie and the referee gave him his second yellow card. Rangers threatened to run riot and man of the match Kennedy, as well as Bruce and Sheron, had shots well saved while all Boro had to offer were long-range efforts from Beck and Merson which flew over the bar. It was the first time this season that Boro have lost two games on the trot in the league and the Coca-Cola Cup finalists will now be looking over their shoulders at the chasing pack. Teams: QPR: Harper, Bardsley, Morrow, Kulcsar, Ready, Yates, Perry (Bruce 7), Quashie (Heinola 89), Sheron, Gallen (Slade 83), Kennedy. Booked: Yates, Gallen. Goals: Vickers 32 og, Bruce 37, Gallen 38, Sheron 45, 53. BBC Middlesbrough v QPR Npower Championship Venue: Riverside Stadium Date: Saturday, 26 February Kick-off: 1500 GMT Coverage: Watch highlights on The Football League Show; Listen on BBC Radio 5 live and BBC local radio; text commentary on the BBC Sport website TEAM NEWS Barry Robson could return to the Boro squad after a hamstring injury, but Justin Hoyte's expected return from a similar problem has been put back. Stephen McManus, Kevin Thomson, Matthew Bates and Danny Coyne are out, while Willo Flood's return from a knee injury has been delayed by a thigh strain. QPR are still without forward Tommy Smith, who has a hamstring problem. But Hogan Ephraim is available again after serving a three-match ban for his recent dismissal against Reading. MATCH PREVIEW These clubs started the season among the favourites to win the Championship and while Queens Park Rangers are on course to do so, Middlesbrough are battling to avoid heading out of the division in the opposite direction. Boro are only two places above the drop zone but have eased their relegation fears with three wins from their last six matches. Their 3-2 victory at Millwall last time out was another step in the right direction. Rangers took another step towards the Premier League when they overcame a stubborn Ipswich side in midweek. That 2-0 win maintained their five-point lead at the top of the table and extended their unbeaten run to nine matches. Boss Neil Warnock opted to replace centre-backs Matt Connolly and Kaspars Gorkss for that game, recalling Fitz Hall and giving Dan Shitttu his first outing since returning to Loftus Road. The decision was vindicated and Shittu is now in line for the 300th appearance of his club career. MATCH FACTS Head-to-head • QPR have won 14 of the 42 previous matches between these clubs - one more than Middlesbrough - but have lost on their last three visits to Teesside. • Rangers beat Boro 3-0 earlier this season and a win on Saturday would complete their first league 'double' over them since the 1976/77 top-flight campaign. Middlesbrough • Middlesbrough's last two games have produced a total of 12 goals. • A defeat would leave Boro with 16 league losses - as many as they suffered during the whole of last season. • They have lost five Championship matches this term after being ahead. Queens Park Rangers • A win for QPR would be the club's 400th in the second tier. • Rangers have the best defensive record in the Championship, having conceded only 20 goals and kept an unequalled 18 clean sheets. • The west London side are yet to lose this season after scoring the opening goal. They have won 15 and drawn three of the 18 games in which they have scored first. • If restored to the side, defender Kaspars Gorkss will be making his 150th league start. news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_div_1/9405034.stm

Youngsters to swim – or sink * by Matthew Leslie, The Journal www.journallive.co.uk/newcastle-sports/football-news/2011/02/26/youngsters-to-swim-or-sink-61634-28238604/#ixzz1F3MB5uQ9WHILE delighted with his side’s recent goal-scoring streak, Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray will be hoping to stem the flow at the other end ahead of QPR’s visit to the Riverside this afternoon. These past two weeks have seen Boro smash in six goals, but the fact that they only came away from the Swansea and Millwall games with three points was due to the fact they let in as many. In fairness, Mowbray has had to shuffle his defensive pack – particularly in the centre. January saw the departure of David Wheater to Bolton while club captain Matthew Bates is currently sidelined with an injury. This has meant that Mowbray has had to throw youngsters Seb Hines and Jonathan Grounds in to tread water in some very choppy waves. Given the team’s current predicament at the bottom end of the Championship, never has the term sink or swim been more aptly coined. However, sharp though the learning curve might be for Hines and Grounds, Mowbray insists that they have a great chance to carve a fine reputation for themselves. He said: “The performances over the last month have been pretty good. However, they do say that sometimes the result is an imposter as I felt we played better in the 4-3 loss to Swansea then we did in our win at Millwall. “You can’t say we’ve not been entertaining these past two weeks – six goals in and as many out. But we only got three points from those two games instead of six. “At this moment, bearing in mind where this club is, we need to win matches and get points on the table. “We need to get ourselves in the position where we can start to build again. Yet as we move on, I do hope the team’s brand of football is something that we continue to talk about. “Obviously we would like to make things easier on ourselves by continuing to keep scoring goals while tightening things up at the back. But you have to take into account that we’ve had to make a lot of changes in the centre of defence. “We’ve lost David Wheater and Matthew Bates is injured so that leaves the two youngsters (Jonathan Grounds and Seb Hines). We’ve had to throw together two boys with very little experience and sometimes that can hurt the team – not by lack of desire or effort but just a lack of experience. There are two very honest guys, but I used Andrew Davies as a third centre-half last week as we needed a presence at the back. “In an ideal world, youngsters like Seb and Jonathan would be given some time to get experience and become more streetwise with each passing game but the situation at the moment demands that they do so quickly – that’s football. “You throw them in and if they learn the lessons quickly, then a youngster can build a career for himself. But that’s how football works. A few years ago we had Ugo Ehiogu and Gareth Southgate at the back. We then went on to Wheater and Bates and some would have thought what a come down. “But now we’ve moved down to Hines and Grounds and they now have to build their reputations. When the opportunity comes, they have to grab it.” A tough test awaits not just those two but the Boro team as a whole with the league leaders rolling into town but while Mowbray appreciates the quality that QPR are armed with, he believes his troops can make life tough for Neil Warnock’s men today. He added: “QPR is one we’re looking forward to and they will be a good test for us. They’re at the top of the table – a position which they’ve richly deserved. In Neil they have a manager who’s been around the block a few times and knows what it takes to get promotion.“Neil’s got a lot of options in his team both at the back and up front including some highly individualistic talented players who can hurt teams in this league and plenty of strength in depth.
“I’m pretty sure will will go into this game full of confidence, knowing that we can cause them problems.”

QPR OFFICIAL SITE
THE FRIDAY PREVIEW: BOROPosted on: Fri 25 Feb 2011 This weekend Neil Warnock takes his table-topping QPR team to the home of Middlesbrough. Buoyed by Tuesday night's 2-0 win over Ipswich Town at Loftus Road, the R's boss will be hoping his side can extend their unbeaten run in the npower Championship to ten games when they visit the Riverside. Boro will also be in confident mood, however, following their 3-2 triumph against Millwall in south London last weekend. And they will be keen to forget about their last display in front of their own fans, which saw them lose 4-3 against promotion-chasing Swansea City, having been 3-1 up with half an hour remaining. Tony Mowbray took over the reins at Middlesbrough four months ago following Gordon Strachan's departure. After their relegation from the top flight in 2009, many anticipated a swift return for the teessiders, but that has not been the case. Mowbray - who made more than 400 appearances as a player for the Club having come through the ranks - is looking to steady the ship this term before making them a real force to be reckoned with next season. For now, however, the priority is to remain in the Championship. Going into this weekend's fixtures, Boro are just five points clear of the relegation pack. Leroy Lita's goals could play a crucial role in achieving that target. The former Reading man, who switched Berkshire for the north east last summer on a free, has hit four goals in his last six appearances. In September, QPR beat Boro 3-0 at Loftus Road. Following a tight first half, goals from Heidar Helguson (pen), Hogan Ephraim and Jamie Mackie sealed the points for Warnock's men. Pre-match Talk *Dan Shittu - "Middlesbrough are a good side but we will be going there full of confidence and looking to win the game. Hopefully we can leave with all three points." *Scott McDonald - "QPR are the team in form and the team to beat. But we're very confident that, especially at home, we can more than match any team in this league." www.qpr.co.uk/page/Preview/0,,10373~2301275,00.html Match odds with Coral Middlesbrough win - 7/4 Draw - 9/4 QPR win - 6/4 Match Coverage QPR Player will be providing live commentary of this fixture, as well as offering highlights later in the week.
