Crawley 'fan' arrested and banned after using FA Cup video to taunt Manchester United over Munich disaster

A Crawley fan has been arrested by police and banned for life by the club after taunting Manchester United over the Munich air disaster in the video for their official FA Cup song.

Crawley officials reported him to police after a United fan noticed the 19 year-old making aircraft gestures in the video, which had been posted on YouTube ahead of the fifth-round clash between the sides.

A statement from Sussex Police issued this morning read: "The man from Crawley was arrested under the Public Order Act on suspicion of causing harassment, alarm or distress and has been bailed until 25 February pending further enquiries.

"As part of his bail conditions the man is not allowed to travel to Manchester for the Crawley Town Football Club match against Manchester United on Saturday 19 February."

The non-league side had recorded a version of The Specials' song 'A Message to You Rudy' called 'A Message to You Rooney' and were unaware of the gestures made by the fan during the recording.

Chief executive Alan Williams told The Guardian: "We immediately pulled it off the (club) website and removed it from YouTube.

"We've called in the police to see if they will press charges and we have identified the idiot responsible and banned him from the club for life.

"He's not welcome here now or ever again. This should be an unbelievable week for us, playing the biggest club there is, and if anyone thinks Crawley would deliberately insult Manchester United over something so sensitive, that is what gets to me more than anything."

Eight United players were among 23 passengers who died when a plane carrying the team back from a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade crashed on a Munich runway in 1958.

Well now that I have seent he video evidence, whats the friggen problem? I was expecting to see the guy do an airplane impersonation. What i saw may be conbstrued as "Your gonna crash" out of the cup but nothing really blatant. I retract my initial response. A bit too precious.

Hi Andy - I totally agree - if I didn't see the arrow I would have had a hard time trying to pick up the guy who was doing this so called horrendous crime.

Probably stupid and childish but is it worthy of a ban and a possible criminal investigation? If so, then Britain clearly does not have the same problems that the rest of the world has if the authorities want to get involved in this.

A lot about nothing if you ask me, and it leads me to another topic.

What happened in Munich 1958 is indeed tragic and I can understand why is still plays a prominent role at Utd. I have no problems with that but the way Utd & the press go on you would swear that that this is the only such tragedy to have hit the football world - and, even worse, still uses it to gain sympathy from around the world, not to mention expand their fan base.

There are many football fans out there who are not aware that the likes of Torino, Sporting Lima & the Zambian Football team have been hit by similar tragedies - with equal, if not greater, tragic results. That to me is the tragedy of the whole situation.

By the way I agree about the comment about the song - I wonder what Jerry Dammers & co would think of this "version"

He's definately a Grade-A moron, no doubts about that, look at the way he starts checking the "bird" out when she starts dancing, real moronic, leery suburban behaviour, I bet this character is the type that regards John Terry as a role model & Icon & is a real "handful" out on a Friday / Saturday night down whatever hell hole suburban nightclub they have in Crawley High Street. I'd also suggest he has repressed Homosexual tendencies which explains the insecure "leery" behaviour towards a scantily clad female whilst the rest of the males in the video no doubt comfortable with their own sexuality carry on dancing oblivious gyrating "bird"

Having said that, I feel that ANY attack on Manchester United is fully justified & should be applauded & encouraged.

MAN CHARGED OVER CRAWLEY VIDEO

A 19-year-old man has been charged by police after a fan of non-league Crawley Town FC allegedly mocked the Munich air disaster in a video for their official FA Cup song.

James Butler, from Beeches Crescent, Crawley, West Sussex, was charged under the Public Order Act on suspicion of using threatening, abusive or insulting words with intent to cause harassment, alarm or distress, police said.

The charge followed complaints by Manchester United fans about the reworking of The Specials' hit A Message To You, Rudy, adapted by musician Mike Dobie with the new title A Message To You, Rooney.

Crawley Town posted the video on their official website and YouTube to mark their clash with United at Old Trafford in the fifth round of the FA Cup on February 19.

But officials at the West Sussex club failed to realise that one of the people dancing by the stage made frequent apparent aircraft gestures about the Munich tragedy.

The man also held up his fingers to count one, then nine, then five and eight to symbolise 1958, the year when 23 people died when the plane carrying United's team crashed on its way back from a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade.

A Sussex Police spokesman said Butler will appear on bail at Crawley Magistrates' Court on March 3 after being charged this afternoon.

He said: "Butler was arrested by police in Crawley on 14 February following a complaint about part of the content of a music video produced to support Crawley Town Football Club in its FA Cup run.

"He was subsequently released on police bail and was charged when he answered to that bail this afternoon.
