Crewe Alex: Gradi ponders giving Witton youngster a second chance
By Crewe Alex Gwyn Griffiths
DANNY Maguire could still earn himself a contract with Crewe if he continues to impress at non-league Witton Albion, writes Gwyn Griffiths.
Dario Gradi took time out to watch the midfielder in action at Skelmersdale on Tuesday night and says he hasn't ruled out the youngster, despite an inconclusive summer trial at Gresty Road.
The former QPR youngster has played regularly for the Evo-Stik Division One North outfit over the past two months after being recommended to Albion boss Paul Ogden.
"We're still keeping an open mind on Danny. He's signed up with Witton, but we are still looking at him as a possibility," said the Crewe boss.
Maguire, aged 21, spent a year out of the game recovering from a serious knee injury after the Professional Footballers' Association helped put his career back on track by funding surgery.
His grandfather then wrote to Gradi asking whether he could examine his credentials, and Maguire went on to feature in some of Crewe's pre-season warm-up games.
Maguire has agreed non-contract terms with the Northwich-based outfit after making his debut against Ossett Town at the end of September.
Meanwhile, Gradi hopes keeper Steve Phillips will be able to resurface on the training ground next week.
Phillips, who has lost his place to loan keeper Rhys Taylor has been troubled by a hip injury, which has postponed a potential loan move.
"Steve is progressing and he should be making some inroads next week," added Gradi.
Meanwhile, youngsters Antoni Sarcevic and Ajay Leitch-Smith remain in the Gresty Road treatment room after both sustained ankle injuries.
