Irish Examiner - Angry Ipswich refute Keane-Delaney bust-up claim

IPSWICH Town moved last night to nip in the bud claims that manager Roy Keane had been involved in a training ground bust-up with fellow Corkman Damien Delaney.
The club took decisive action on what appears to be unfounded speculation after they learned that a number of tabloid newspapers were planning to run the story today. The club has already engaged legal advice on the matter.
And sources close to Delaney corroborated the club’s version of events, insisting that any disagreement between himself and Keane had been "blown out of all proportion."
Said the well-placed source: "Damien is aware of these rumours, the club chief executive has already been onto him about them. He (Damien) utterly refutes any suggestion that a dispute with Keane escalated to the point that they had to be pulled apart. It’s a complete joke, there’s nothing to the story."
Ipswich last night released a terse statement on the matter, stressing: "Ipswich Town Football Club refutes the malicious suggestion that an incident took place between the manager and Damien Delaney. We have no more to add to this statement."
Delaney, 27, was Keane’s first senior signing at Town, joining the Blues from QPR for £750,000 in July 2009, three months after the former Ireland skipper took over at Portman Road.
The twice-capped Ireland international had a poor start to his Ipswich career, but by the end of last season had established himself at the centre of the defence, alongside Northern Irishman Gareth McAuley.
The former Leicester, Hull and Cork City man missed the start of this season after suffering a compartment syndrome injury in his thigh during training, a rare condition which could potentially have led to the loss of his leg if not treated in time.
Prior to Ipswich’s 1-0 defeat at bottom-placed Championship side Preston — their sixth league loss on the trot — Keane said Delaney’s absence from the previous reverse at home to Swansea was due to the good form of youngsters Tommy Smith and Troy Brown.
"Damien was suspended for the West Brom game when the team kept a clean sheet and I thought they played reasonably well. I didn’t think there was any reason to change it," he said. "Damo had a run out in the reserves in the week and he’ll have a chance of being involved on Saturday."
But Delaney was once again left out of Keane’s side at Deepdale and appears likely to move on in January or when his contract ends in the summer unless a change of manager takes place before then.
Keane’s position at Ipswich is fraught as it is, after a run of 10 defeats in 13 games, dropping them to 18th in the Championship.
