Crystal Palace Baltimore To Sit Out 2011 NASL SeasonPosted by Dave Topp on December 4
Crystal Palace Baltimore will not compete in the 2011 NASL season. According to a press release published on Friday, the club will take a year off to regroup, with the intention of fielding a team again for the 2012 season.
The club also announced the end of its partnership with its English counterpart, Crystal Palace FC of the Championship Division. The two sides have unofficially been apart for a few months now, as both have been strapped with financial difficulties.
With a proposed relaunch in 2012, the club will focus its efforts on securing a new home stadium. Palace Baltimore called five different venues home this season. “We want to be downtown and believe doing so will allow us to better connect to our fans and the city,” said Pete Medd, part-owner and President of Crystal Palace Baltimore.
The club plans to partner with the Washington Freedom of the WPS to secure a stadium in downtown Baltimore. They are expected to renovate and co-exist in a stadium close to M&T Bank Stadium, home of the Baltimore Ravens. “We would like to thank our loyal fans who have stuck with us despite not having a place to call home and we are committed to giving them what they deserve and what all of our future fans in Baltimore deserve; a venue that honors their loyalty and commitment to the club,” Medd said.
Because the club will operate without its UK affiliate, a new name will be be given to the team upon its return to the NASL. Already decided in this pending renaming of the club are its new colors: yellow, red and black – which are also the official colors of the city of Baltimore and the state of Maryland.
