Queens Park Rangers were instrumental in staging the first floodlit game ever played in this country under F.A ruling.
It took place at the White City Stadium, on Wednesday, January 4th, 1933, and was in the nature of an experimental match to test out the possibilities of football under artificial lighting.
It all all started when the London clubs got together to discuss ways and means.
The White City authorities had spent a large sum of money on a floodlighting system and it fell to us , as "football tenants" of the White City at that time , to make the necessary arrangements.
Two teams from selected London clubs were got together and the first Experimental Floodlight Match took place.
The two teams were: Emery (Orient), French (Brentford), Sweetman (Millwall and later a QPR player), Tomkins (Fulham), Goodier (QPR), Woodward (Watford), Horton (Charlton), Black (Charlton), Goddard (QPR), Harkins (Millwall), and Clarke (Palace).
Preedy (Arsenal), Barber (Chelsea), Fryatt (W. Ham), Johnson (W Ham), Haynes (Arsenal), Evans (Spurs), Ruffel (W Ham), Dudley (Chelsea), Lambert (Arsenal), Brain (Spurs) and Reed (Arsenal).
Quote from the programme of the day.
"The sanction of the F.A. had, of course, to be obtained to play this match but the fact that it has been given must not be taken as an indication that the F.A. approve of floodlight football; neither do QPR or any of the other clubs participating express any definite opinion at the moment of the desirability or otherwise of regular floodlight football matches."

Actually it was huge. Though during my era its best sucess was as a Dog Track. We were there twice. Bushmans historic post for floodlights in 30s but not long I think also in the 60s for couple of years under my cousin the washing machine man. . It was too huge and too remote for our crowds.
It could get really filled up for all the top track and field events, especially the British Empire Games and other big athletic events. The capacity was close to 100 thousand when filled and terraces like old Wembley stadium packed for those events. .

greyhound derby night was always good, excellent atmosphere and good crowds, horse of the year show was lost when they built the flyover and then they had speedway for a couple of years, sadly in the end was rarely used

reckon if the stadium was still there clubs would be falling over themselves to develop it, the most accessible part of London

Good to see the FA sitting on the fence, proper shocker that is.
Who won?
Where were the floodlights?
Why am I asking these questions?

Hi there I'm the grandson of Bert Emery the goalkeeper of the Reds team & I found this message on a Google search whilst researching his history. I've got his medal & a programme from the game. If anybody can supply any more information on him that would be great. Many thanks Dave

Bit off topic but it is floodlight related
QPR were due to send a side to open Sussex County League side Hailsham's floodlights in 1991/92 but I can't verify if the game actually took place
Many thanks for any assistance

when you google the first game under floodlights, it comes up with Sheffield United 40 years earlier ?

I think I remember that QPR were also the first club to install floodlights suitable for colour TV. It all happened because of BBC being round the corner.

I remember Gerald Sinstat commenting on a Liverpool v Chelsea game and saying..."For those of you with Black & White TV's, Liverpool are in their all Red strip."
