Chelsea youngster Josh McEachran and Swansea City’s Scott Sinclair lead the new faces in Stuart Pearce’s England Under-21 squad, as they gear up for a meeting with Germany in Wiesbaden next week (Tuesday).
Manchester City’s Ben Mee is the third player to receive his first call-up to the small squad as Pearce looks to offer some big match experience to his players in a re-run of the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship Final.
City’s Micah Richards also returns to the squad having missed the recent play-off fixtures against Romania through injury, whilst Pearce will be delighted to see Jack Rodwell back in the fold having recovered from an ankle injury that kept him out of the squad since August.
Sinclair, a former England U19 international, has been in sparkling form for his club Swansea this season, scoring eleven goals, including seven in the Championship, since his summer move from Chelsea.
McEachran, who helped the Three Lions lift the European U17 Championship earlier this year, has recently made his Premier League and Champions League debut for Chelsea and is still only 17.
Mee, a centre-half who played for England in the 2009 FIFA U20 World Cup in Egypt, has made one appearance for City this season, in their League Cup fixture with West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.
Speaking about the make-up of his squad for this fixture, Coach Pearce said: “There are three new faces in the squad in Scott Sinclair, who has done extremely well for Swansea, Ben Mee of Manchester City and Josh McEachran, who has performed well in the younger age groups and is forcing his way into the Chelsea squad at the moment.
“It’s only a small squad but we want to make sure that everyone has the possibility of getting some game time, and one or two players that have been with the squad, but have not had much game time will definitely get the opportunity to feature.
“Certain individuals will push their case between now and the summer for sure and those who have been solid for the team since last summer have got to carry on their form.
“Fabio picking one or two to step up into the seniors might mean we’ll be short of a few of those players, so it’s given me an opportunity to look at some who are not playing regularly at their clubs and need to get some football with us.
“One or two who have played a lot for their clubs will also get a little break if they’re not needed with the seniors.”
Pearce, who is a veteran of high profile England-Germany encounters, is looking forward to the fixture, despite its status as a friendly: “England versus Germany is a blue chip match at any level.
“It’s going to be tougher for us, being away from home. They’ll probably blood a lot of their next clutch of players and they’ll have a lot to prove, as we found out against France over a year ago when we were soundly beaten.
“Germany are very much unknown to us at this stage. By not qualifying this time around their focus will be sharpened for the next campaign. They have a new group of players coming through which means their building process starts for 2013 now.
“It’ll be a tough game from both nations’ point of view and both nations are looking forward to the game. I think when England play Germany the result always counts but you want to see performances, both from the collective and from individuals.
“We’ve grown and grown as a group and we need to take another step and, with this game being the last in the calendar year, it’d be nice to finish the game and this season undefeated.”
The match will be streamed live on The FA’s online TV channel www.TheFA.com/FATVlive from 5pm (GMT).
