United produced another entertaining ninety minutes of reserve football as they beat Plymouth Argyle by the odd goal in five at Plainmoor. United took a two goal lead before being pegged back in the second half but Martin Gritton sealed the win with a late penalty after Joe Oastler was brought down. There were a number of good performances for the Gulls with Martin Gritton and Romone Rose particularly strong in attack.
The match kicked-off in a light shower and United began smartly enough with Martin Gritton winning a high percentage of headed challenges. Danny Potter was called into early action by Argyle's international strike force of Rory Fallon & Rory Patterson who both tested the United 'keeper but Danny made three impressive saves to deny them.
Trialist Romone Rose forced Chenoweth into a save with a low shot as United created the better attacking situations. Argyle were looking bright on the break but the unusual looking United back four of Halpin, Rowe-Turner, Palmer & Carlisle coped well enough during the first half with what Argyle had to offer.
United took the lead in the 36th minute when a inswinging Nicky Wroe corner was sliced by Mason and flew off toward the far post where Joe Oastler directed the ball home. Shortly after and Rose hit the post with a neat turn & shot from 18 yards which had Chenoweth beaten.
Martin Gritton again proved his worth in the air when he nodded a cross field ball back to Rose who had his header saved by Chenoweth. Just before the break a cleared United corner fell to Wayne Carlisle 25 yards out and he forced the Argyle 'keeper into a good tip over with a fierce left foot volley.
United began the second half far better than the visitors and doubled their lead in the 52nd minute. A period of pressure where Lloyd Macklin and Romone Rose featured ended with Macklin crossing low from the left, the ball deflected out toward the penalty spot where Ashley Yeoman steamed in to power the ball home.
Gritts was proving a real force in the air in this match and nodded yet another ball into the path of a fellow Gull; this time it was Lloyd Macklin who benefited but his header from six yards was straight at Chenoweth who gathered at the second attempt.
Argyle pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute with a bizarre goal; a long throw-in from the right was flicked on by Sawyer and then left by every other player in the area as it bounced toward and then inside the far post.
United changed their formation from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2 and it did nothing to affect their positive attacking intent and another run down the left by Halpin ended with Gritton glancing a header goalwards but too close to Chenoweth.
Rose produced a superb solo run and cross that almost brought a third United goal but the final ball just eluded Lloyd Macklin at the far post.
United had only themselves to blame for Argyle's equaliser when Saul Halpin lost the ball on the edge of the Plymouth area and the visitors broke away. Danny Potter managed to deflect a Mason attempt wide of the goal but Leonard was following up and scored from a tight angle to level the scores.
With 8 minutes remaining United were awarded a penalty when Joe Oastler got around the outside of Baker who was adjudged to have clipped the United midfielder although the ball seemed to already have been out of play. Regardless of the how or why Martin Gritton stepped up and calmly side-footed the ball past Chenoweth to give the Gulls a 3-2 lead.
Nicky Wroe tested the Argyle 'keeper with a 25 yard free-kick after a foul on Lloyd Macklin as United finished the match strongly. There was still time for Macklin to get a fourth but Chenoweth tipped the ball over.
Both defences were dominated by their opposing attacks at times but United created far more chances and deservedly won the game even after a second half comeback by Argyle.
