It's interesting/depressing (and of course futile!) to speculate how good certain QPR players might have become...were it not for events
- Ray Jones of course
- Martyn Busby, who before breaking his leg looked like was destined for greatness
- Kevin Gallen of course
- Frank Sibley
- Phil Nutt?
And then of course more "self-inflicted" such as
- Leon Jeanne
And then finally players who as youngsters seemed would go on to greatness, and then it just never happened
- David Kerslake: Solid but not great
- Doug McClure who the youth coach was raving about

- Doug McClure who the youth coach was raving about Thought he was great in "The Land That Time Forgot"!!!! I managed to find that film on DVD earlier this year. Saw it as a youngster and it was cool, watching it now and it's not bad... but Dr Who type special effects. Whatever happened to Brian Fitzgerald?

Alan GLover: we Sold him in 1969 after seven games for 70,000 pounds - Just a few months after we sold Roger Morgan for 100,000 and just before we signed Terry Venbales for 70,000. So a big amount in those days. But a few years at WBA and then I think Orient andnothing of note.

It was depressing to see the lineups for the U19s and U17s from 2000 and realise how few of those actually made it. And how many others have gone down a similar route in the last 10 years. Nicky Bull had a decent career at Aldershot but has been left out/let go now they are back in the Football League Marcus Bean played nearly 50 games before Blackpool, Rotherham and Brentford. But we got ZERO in fees. Justin Cochrane was at Crewe and Rotherham before being release by Hayes & Yeading in the summer Dennis Oli was (still is?) with Gillingham. I don't think any of the others ever got anywhere. Also depressing this week to read about Olly Burgess making his debut for Binfield. My brother brought him to QPR when he was involved with the Youth team. Fast tracked by Gerry Francis, made his debut against Swindon, and did his cruciate ligament. Was never the same player. And definitely one whose career was ruined by an injury.

I'm surprsied nobody mentioned Rob Steiner - the Swede forward who had a fabulous 1999/2000 season for us and had a bright future ahead of him. Then he broke his leg / shin and would never be able to play senior level football again.
There are many, many reasons why the 2000/01 season was such a nightmare, but I do I believe that that injury to RS was one of them.
Another factor was the suden loss of form for one season wonder Stuart Wardley. I think we got him from the non leagues for a bargain ahead of the 1999/2000 season and again he proved to be a revelation - winning the Young QPR Player of the Season award - and a great future beckoned.
I'm not sure if it went to his head or what but 2000/01 proved to be a nightmare. He lost his form and, in a side that was going from one crisis to another, he also lost his confidence.
He should have been dropped by Gerry - not only to get him back down on planet earth but also to try and reagin both his form and confidence - but he never was and he just went from bad, to worse, to worst, to beyond that. He was never the same player again
When I last heard he was playing something like Ryman league football and I think he has totally packed it in. Great potential but badly mismanaged by circumstances.
