Iceland coach Ólafur Jóhannesson's hands have been tied by the Under-21s' play-off against Scotland leaving him to name an experienced squad for the Group H visit of Portugal.
Read moreIceland coach Ólafur Jóhannesson has named an experienced squad to face Portugal in Reykjavík on 12 October in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Group H.
His hand has been forced in part by the success of the Under-21 side, who will be at full strength for their 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship play-off against Scotland on 7 and 11 October, therefore depriving the seniors of seven players who might otherwise have expected a call up.
"This decision was taken some time ago and I will obey it," Jóhannesson said. "We are looking at an exciting future. We have a lot of young and promising players who are playing abroad and not sitting on the bench."
Iceland are still looking for their first points of the campaign after kicking off with defeats against Norway and Denmark, and Jóhannesson will be hoping a few wise old heads can turn his side's fortunes around.
Portsmouth FC defender Hermann Hreidarsson returns from injury and there is also a place for Stoke City FC recruit Eidur Smári Gudjohnsen. Theódór Elmar Bjarnason and Gunnar Heidar Thorvaldsson also come in, as does uncapped FH Hafnarfjördur midfielder Ólafur Páll Snorrason. Captain Sölvi Geir Ottesen misses out after breaking his arm playing for club side FC København.
