Dominique Cuperly has provisionally called up 25 European based players who may make the final list.
By Rami Ayari
Morocco caretaker coach Dominique Cuperly has revealed a list of 25 European based players who have been s pre-selected for the Atlas Lions’ upcoming 2012 AFCON qualifier against Tanzania on October 9th. The list is not definitive considering that some of the players who have been named won’t make the final cut and other locally based elements will be added to round out the squad that will travel to Dar es Salaam.
Two new potential additions to the Atlas Lions setup are Ajax owned Ismail Aissati and Standard Liege’s Mehdi Carcela Gonzalez, both of whom have been courted by the FRMF for some time.
Even though Cuperly will coach the final team, it is Eric Gerets who will have selected the players in it. The Moroccan Royal Football Federation have remained mum on when the Belgian tactician will leave Saudi Arabia, where he is still coach of Al-Hilal, and take over the Atlas Lions. Nevertheless, it is widely believed that Gerets won’t arrive in the north African country until his current club are finished with their Asian Champions League campaign, which could potentially take until the end of November.
No date was given for when the final list for the next qualifier will be announced but it will likely be before the end of the month if one considers previous selection trends.
Below is the list of pre-selected European based players by position:
Goalkeepers: Kharroubi Yassine (EA Guingamp)
Defenders: Ahmed Kantari (Brest), Chakib Benzoukane (Levski Sofia), Abdelhamid El Kaoutari (Montpellier), Mehdi Benatia (Udinese), Michael Chretien Basser (Nancy), El Akchaoui Youssef (SC Heerenveen)
Midfielders: Youssouf Hadji (Nancy), Jaouad Zairi (Olympiacos), Houcine Kharja (PSG), Adel Taarabt (QPR), Nacer Chadli (FC Twente), Mehdi Carcela Gonzalez (Standard Liege), Mbark Boussoufa (Anderlecht), Adil Hermach (Lens), Kamel Chafni (Auxerre), Ismail Aissati (Vitesse), Nabil Dirar (Club Brugge), Nabil El Zhar (PAOK), Hassan Alla (Le Havre)
Strikers: Marouane Chamakh (Arsenal), Oussama Aissadi (SC Heerenveen), Youssef El Arabi (CAEN), Mounir El Hamdaoui (Ajax), Nabil Baha (Malaga CF)
