Match Date: Tue 21 Sep 2010 Date: Tue 21 Sep 2010. Tom Harvey reports Reserves sunk by late strike
A goal three minutes from time saw Charlton's reserves slip to an unlucky 3-2 defeat in a behind-closed-doors friendly away to Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday afternoon.
After a mistake by Carl Jenkinson saw Rangers take an early lead, the Addicks hit back to level at the break through Tosan Popo.
Substitute Freddie Warren then put Charlton in front on the hour mark, but Rangers equalised with 15 minutes remaining, before grabbing the winner in the dying stages of the game.
Charlton fielded a young side against their more experienced opponents, with Luke Daniels, on loan from West Bromwich Albion, starting in goal, behind a back four of Jenkinson, 16-year-old Semi Ajayi, Jonathan Fortune and a triallist.
Another triallist was named in midfield alongside Alex Stavrinou, with Callum Harriott on the right and Ben Davisson on the left. Popo was partnered by Tamer Tuna up front.
The Addicks made a bad start to the game, with Rangers finding the back of the net just three minutes in when Jenkinson allowed an opposition player to get in a shot which beat Daniels in goal.
But Charlton came back into the game, Davisson forcing the Rangers goalkeeper to tip a 25-yard effort onto the post, before the QPR shot-stopper made a superb double stop, parrying away a Harriott free-kick and then saving Jenkinson's follow-up.
The Addicks' determined play was rewarded just before the break when they made it 1-1. Tuna dummied a throughball to bamboozle the R's defence and allow Popo to race through and finish with aplomb.
The start of the second half was a scrappy affair, but Charlton were to go in front in the 60th minute when Warren, introduced at the break, made a great tackle to win back the ball after his own loose touch. The midfielder quickly spread the play wide, before bombing forward to meet a cross and finish comfortably.
The Addicks were seemingly in control at this point, but Rangers levelled with 15 minutes to go.
And, with the game heading for a draw, Rangers then snatched the win. A quick break down the right saw an R's man get the better of Fortune. A ball into the box then found a Rangers striker the wrong side of Ajayi and the home forward volleyed in from 12 yards to seal the victory.
Despite the loss, Charlton first-team coach Mark Kinsella was proud of his side, stating afterwards: "They were a stronger outfit than us with older pros. We had a young squad.
"We could have done better defensively with the first goal, Carl allowed their player to get off his shot. We could have been forgiven for thinking it was going to be a long afternoon but after that, we grew in stature as the game went on.
"We had to work hard for the ball and we started to play with a bit more confidence. For the next 25 minutes, we were excellent and our strikers - although not the biggest physically - held the ball up well and gave us a platform to play.
"1-1 was well deserved. We probably didn't need the half-time break as we were a bit rushed at the start of the second but we calmed down and went 2-1 up.”
Continued Kinsella: "We made a few substitutions as there were a few tired legs out there. But then we made a couple of silly errors for the second goal and they grabbed a third late on.
"We ended up losing the game but the lads can walk away with their heads held high. We gave them a match and passed it just as well as they did.
"It's learning curve for our young boys. They'll learn from their mistakes. Carl made a mistake in the first three minutes when he let their player have a shot but he never did it again after that.
"We had a lot of 16-year-olds playing today and they put in a good shift. Phil Parkinson was watching and they have to show him they've got that hunger to be a professional footballer. They did that and the gaffer's gone away happy with what he saw.”
On the display of Daniels, who joined the Addicks on an initial 28-day loan last Thursday, Kinsella said: "Luke did well. He conceded three but couldn't do anything about the goals.
"His decision making was good and his kicking was good. He's disappointed but he couldn't be faulted for anything.”
Added Kinsella: "Forch put in a solid performance. He had a triallist on his left and a young 16-year-old to his right. He still needs games to get back to where he wants to be. But games like this can only help him.”
Charlton: Daniels, Jenkinson, Ajayi, Fortune, Triallist, Harriott, Triallist, Stavrinou, Davisson, Popo, Tuna.
