BARACLOUGH NAMED CARETAKER BOSS
Posted on: Sun 12 Sep 2010
First team coach Ian Baraclough has been named as caretaker manager of the Iron following the departure of Nigel Adkins and Andy Crosby to Southampton.
The 39-year-old originally joined United from Notts County in March 2004, playing an active role in central midfield for three seasons - two of which saw his team win promotion from League's Two and One respectively.
Two seasons ago, in the Championship, he was used more sparingly in his familiar midfield position, as well as at centre-back and left-back when required.
The end of that campaign saw him quit the playing side of the game, focusing more on his coaching duties.
In all, he made 149 appearances for the club, scoring 11 goals.
He will start his new role on Monday as the Iron prepare for their away clash at Sheffield United on Tuesday night.

ADKINS APPOINTED SOUTHAMPTON MANAGER
Posted on: Sun 12 Sep 2010
Nigel Adkins has been announced as the new manager of Southampton, signing a three-year deal.
Assistant manager Andy Crosby will join him at the League One outfit after the two clubs agreed a compensation package for the pair.
Speaking on Sunday evening, Adkins said: "I am delighted to be the manager of Southampton.
"It's a very proud honour for myself, and Andy Crosby who is joining me as assistant manager, to join a club with such a big tradition.
"I'm very proud to have been given the opportunity by the chairman, Nicola Cortese, and look forward to taking the football club forward.
"I'm really looking forward to this fresh new challenge, and I'm very optimistic of where we can take this football club."
It ends a 14-year association with United for Adkins, who was physiotherapist for a decade before becoming caretaker manager following the departure of Brian Laws in November 2006.
He had a decent spell in that capacity - in which United won three, drew two and lost just one out of six - and was handed the reins on a full-time basis just a month later.
Much respected in the game, he was touted as one of the managers of the season after leading his side to the League One title in his first campaign.
Despite putting up a great fight, Sc**thorpe were relegated from the Championship after one season.
Nevertheless, the club regrouped and Adkins guided them to promotion from League One again the following season - this time via the play-offs, courtesy of a 3-2 win over Millwall at Wembley Stadium.
A thrilling campaign full of entertainment also saw the club reach the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final at Wembley too.
The 2009-10 season saw Sc**thorpe survive at Championship level for the first time in 46 years and he leaves the club in its best shape since the halycon days of the early sixties.
His No 2 Crosby will go down in history as a club legend.
A key part of three of the Iron's most recent promotion teams, 'Crozzer' was arguably Brian Laws' most important signing during the summer of 2004. Andy was brought in to plug a defence that conceded 73 goals the previous season.
And how that signing worked as United only conceded 42 goals that year and changed from one of the worst defences in the league to the actual best the season after.
He played a huge role in the club's 2006-07 League One title-winning success, forming a superb partnership with Steve Foster at the heart of the back four. Crosby then enjoyed his first season at Championship level the year after.
A knee problem had kept him out for the majority of the following year, but he returned to play a huge part towards the end as Sc**thorpe won promotion back to the second tier via the play-offs.
The play-off final against Millwall was his last first team appearance for the club as he focused more on the coaching aspect afterwards.
The club would like to thank Nigel and Andy for all their hard work during their time with Sc**thorpe United and wish them all the best for the future.
