6 September, 2000, QPR 1-4 Colchester (agg: 2-4)
Second Division Colchester United provided one of the shocks of the Worthington Cup First Round as they hammered QPR 4-1 at Loftus Road.
Colchester's 19-year-old striker Lomana Lua Lua was the hero as he grabbed a brilliant hat-trick and also set up Steve McGavin for another superb goal.
Lua Lua, who has been interesting some Premiership clubs this season, took just 10 minutes to strike against injury-hit Rangers.
He took full advantage of a mix-up between Matthew Rose and Lee Harper to steal in, round the keeper and slip the ball into the net.
Seven minutes later he struck again, this time netting from a Karl Duguid cross to make it 2-0.
The two goals rocked Rangers and they struggled to get back into the match against a solid United defence.
The home side then threw themselves a life-line in first-half injury time when Kim Breacker crossed from the right for Sammy Koejoe, who headed back for Chris Kiwomya to nod in.
On 55 minutes though Colchester restored their aggregate lead as McGavin powered a low drive into the corner to settle the match.
Lua Lua completed a brilliant hat-trick though five minutes from the end, to make his mark on the night.
Breacker could only deflect a Langley pass into Lua Lua's path and he took his time, beat the keeper and thumped the ball home to round off a memorable night.

MANAGER Gerry Francis was fuming after the 4-1 home defeat against Colchester United in the Worthington Cup.
Gerry said: "We haven't concede four goals at all since I returned to the club. We only lost two games at home last year in the league.
"So to lose four goals at home to a team in a lower division is very disappointing and embarrassing from my point of view. But I have to say Lua Lua was absolutely outstanding. We could not handle him at all. He murdered us.
"OK, we had more chances than them. We didn't put them away so a lot of it is down to us. Also, their keeper made some outstanding saves.
"But I have to say there were periods in the game where we lacked a bit of passion and fight. I'm really disappointed with that. I hate losing at the best of times. I'm not happy. The players have let themselves down, they've let me down, they've let the fans down and they've let the club down. I feel very sorry for the fans.
"There were too many players who we all know could do a lot better than they did on the night. On top of that, you had Lua Lua who was excellent for Colchester. I've seen him in action a few times and that is the best I've seen him play by a long, long way.
"We're out of the cup again and that is a real disappointment to us. We would like a cup run here because it has been years since it happened here. Also, financially it would help us. So all round it was a very, very disappointing night for us.
"We did have 11 players unavailable against Colchester, but I do not want to use that as an excuse. We lost Christer Warren and Stewart Wardley before the game with a virus. Clarke Carlisle got off his sick bed to play as did Karl Connolly.
"But having said that, you still have to perform and do the right things. Over two legs we ought to be able to go on and beat Colchester, but we haven't."
