Tribune Magazine
Tribune to sponsor QPR Ladiesby Tom Miller Friday, September 3rd, 2010 You might not have immediately expected this one, but this year we’re going to be sponsoring top women’s football side Queen’s Park Rangers Ladies. The team are spending their second season in the FA women’s Premier League, and were last year’s league cup winners. QPR is a club with a great history that we are very proud to be associated with, and we hope their ladies team in particular has an equally prestigious future. :-*Now this is a story I really didn't believe I would see, though at the same time one which fills me with enormous pleasure. As a card carrying leftie (which I still am) I worked for Tribune for three very enjoyable years as a youngster from 1965 -68 when Michael Foot was still the owner. Dick Clement was the editor then, a diehard Spurs supporter, though I was successful to some extent in subverting his two sons who occasionally went to see QPR. Aside from that it was not much of a forum for football activities. Sports were usually restricted to the annual cricket matches with the New Statesman and Parliamentary Labour Party cricket teams. However, it was a time when the Left in the Labour Party was strong and we had a large number of Labour MPs who were willing to fight for their beliefs rather than their expenses. The close links between QPR and the Left wing magazine is very welcome from my view and stems I suppose from Kevin Mcgrath's takeover of the magazine following Michael Foot's death. I hope the conection gets firmer and that, with the Mittal family takeover of the club, we will see Kevin Mcgrath back at QPR as a director.
