Unusual! Great Goals 101 - When religion meets football: Itay Shechter (Hapoel Tel Aviv) vs RB SalzburgThursday, August 19th, 2010 The stereotypical relationship between sport and Jews is that Jews don’t play sports, they own the teams or franchises. Hapoel Tel Aviv striker Itay Schecter looked to redress that balance on Wednesday night in the Champions League during the Israeli’s fantastic 3-2 away win at Austrian powerhouse RB Salzburg. After scoring a breakaway third in the contest that put Hapoel within touching distance of the Champions League group stages, the striker celebrated the moment with a particularly Jewish ritual. Dipping into his shin-pad after scoring, Shechter pulled out a red (Hapoel’s colour) Jewish skullcap before falling to his knees and mouthing a short prayer. Although it’s common practice for Cristian footballers to cross themselves after scoring while Muslim footballers bow in similar circumstances, Shechter’s skullcap celebration appeared to rub the ref up the wrong way as the man in black produced a yellow card for the antic. Itay Shechter’s celebration can be seen here. Both 'celebration' and the booking were too much. And both can evoke the unnecessary issues.

Doing a quick prayer is certainly a lot better than some of the stupid rituals I have seen so far this season, such as the fisherman reeling in the player skit.

I played last night and we had a player sent off for swearing, it wasn't him it was someone from the other team. Frustrating.
