Blackpool's chairman Karl Oyston quits amid rumours of disharmony
• No explanation given for chairman's sudden departure• Oyston will remain as acting chief executive in short term
Blackpool are reeling following the sudden resignation of their chairman Karl Oyston. The Premier League newcomers announced yesterday the 43-year-old had stood down with immediate effect. No reasons have been given for Oyston's decision and the news takes the gloss off their opening-day 4-0 win at Wigan Athletic.
The club have endured a turbulent summer since winning promotion to the top flight after a 39-year absence. There have been numerous reports of unrest, including reports of players not being paid bonuses and suggestions that the manager Ian Holloway had quit.
Holloway has denied any intention to resign but he has had a difficult time in the transfer market due to a strict wage ceiling imposed by Oyston. Only in the past week has he been able to add to his threadbare squad, bringing in seven players in quick succession.
Oyston spoke recently of his disillusionment with the business side of Premier League life. "I expected the landscape to be a lot different," said the former chairman, who is the son of Owen Oyston, the majority owner of the club.
"I've been very disappointed in the way that some agents have conducted themselves. I'm not sure I've got the right approach for this division and the more I talk to people at other clubs, the more I realise I'm a lone voice."
However, he has pledged to remain as acting chief executive until the end of the season or a new appointment is made.
That means, in the short term, he will continue to work alongside Holloway in identifying new players and to play a role in the continuing redevelopment of the club's Bloomfield Road stadium.
They are currently having the east stand rebuilt to increase capacity to 16,900 from last season's 12,000 maximum.
