HILL STATUE CAMPAIGN CONTINUES

Posted on: 17.08.2010

Coventry City FC are campaigning to install a statue of football legend, Jimmy Hill, at the Ricoh Arena.

Coventry City Director Joe Elliott and Vice President Kevin Heffernan are leading the initiative to raise the £150,000 necessary to commission and erect the monument.

James William Thomas Hill OBE, better known to all as Jimmy Hill, has had his impact felt in all areas of football. A Player at both Brentford and Fulham between 1949 and 61, he made more than 300 appearances and scored over 50 goals during his career. In this time he also became Chairman of the Professional Footballer's Association.

The statue, to be sculpted by world famous artist Nicholas Dimbleby and placed outside the main entrance to Ricoh Arena, will serve to remind people of and commemorate Hill's achievements.

"Jimmy was responsible, not only for shaping Coventry City into the Club that it is today on and off the pitch, but also changing the face of football" said Joe Elliot. "The statue would be a fitting tribute
to a great man and one of the most important figures in the history of Coventry City."

After retiring as a player in '61, Hill was appointed Manager of Coventry City and led a series of changes that have come to be known as "The Sky Blue Revolution" including a change to the Home kit colours, their nickname and club song as well as redeveloping the club's stadium; Highfield Road. He went on to lead Coventry City from the Third Division to the First, for the first time in the club's history, in less than five years but retired before they began their first season in the top flight. He later returned as Managing Director and then Chairman in the 70's.

As well as his contribution to Coventry, Hill is also known for his innovations within Football in general. As well as ending maximum wage he also had significant involvement in the introduction of the three points for a win system and the first all-seater stadium. He has also been Chairman of both Charlton Athletic and Fulham and had a successful career in broadcasting including as the host of Match of the Day.

"What Jimmy Hill achieved for both Coventry City and the game of football cannot be overstated" continued Elliot.

"Jimmy is a man held in extremely high esteem by supporters, and he is a man of the people, so it is a fitting tribute that a statue to celebrate his achievements should be commissioned by the fans"

Coventry's July 30th pre-season game against West Bromwich Albion was designated Jimmy Hill tribute appeal day with a reunion between Hill and many of the players of his 61-67 teams and a portion of the match's earnings going towards the campaign.

Gavin Megaw, Director of External Affairs for The Football League commented that "Jimmy Hill has had an illustrious career encompassing virtually every role possible within the game. It would be fitting to see him recognised in this way and we wish the campaign every success in making this tribute a reality."

The appeal will finish at the end of September but for now you can donate to the Jimmy Hill Tribute Appeal through your local branch of the Coventry Building Society or by sending a cheque to Godiva House, Binley Business Park, Coventry, CV3 2TQ. You can also call Michelle Ridley on 7678 6300 to donate via credit card and online bankers can use account number 44715278 and sort-code 40-63-01 to give.

One day we will be building a monument to Gianni I am sure
The man who turned us from a financially struggling League 1 side into (hopefully) a Premiership club again

Well I hope so...It will make it all the more dramatic to then tear down that statue! :o

Our achievements will be DESPITE Gianni, not BECAUSE of Gianni

But I'm happy to discuss with you the past 5 1/2 years of the Gianni era. Things said that weren't EXACTLY accurate. ACtions taken...Etc

Compare now to where we were when he bailed the club out and we were in League 1
Most fans see a big improvement
Believe me Mike, having seen things rom the inside, it's BECAUSE of him and DESPITE the dwindling band of his enemies
One day even you may see the light

Of course fans see an improvement between now and when we in the Third Division. Our promotion from the Third Division was certainly nothing to do with him.

Our position now is despite him...Just look at all the players he's brought into the club...costing this club a fortune.

Now I do feel sorry for Mr. Caliendo (I've changed!) He lost a lot of money. Mr. Paladini: Well he's been getting a QPR salary for the past six years

Enemies? That's a strong word. Just because one feels he's done a terrible job, etc, etc, etc, that doesn't make one his "Enemy." That may be how HE and his supporters may feel about those who dare criticize.

But I have a weakness, Nico: I like truth. I don't like non-truths.

It was kind of a shame that you "hijacked" a thread on a nice topic

You're obviously welcome to initiate a dozen threads...

Me too Mikey
Prefer truth not propoganda - just feel you have only seen half the picture
Indeed you reveal a little of that in your post. Your change of position on Caliendo. I suspect you took an instant disliking him, not based on fact or truths, but because he was associated with someone else you don't like. You are right, Caliendo did a lot for QPR and I still feel ashamed about the way he was mistreated. I shall always regard him as a friend and a man who treated the club with integrity, and that's regardless of my friendship with Gianni.
You've seen the light on that... one day....

And I don't regard you as one of the dwindling enemies Mike. I meant the bloke who is the self appointed leader of the raving nutter tendency of course. The bloke who would prefer any old dross to run the club apart from GP all because GP once snubbed his soppy idea to fly to Northern Ireland and act the agent by meeting a postman. Ever since the LSA laughed at Mr Nutter he has wanted personal vengeance - even sending Gianni texts saying I will destroy you etc. Before that he was the most obsequious crawler you meet whenever he saw Gianni. That's what's so sad, when a little man with a big ego and mental issues starts a one man campaign and other people think it's about something genuine.

You, on the other hand Mike, have always been straight and fair in my book - except for the occasional time you have, like the rest of us - got carried away

[Actually not really: One of my issues -actually two: His behind the scene role at the time of the coup. Two: The fact, that his criminal conviction was never really explained. I thought that was worthy of discussion...More some other time perhaps]

[I Can Understand disagreements. Fights. Feuds. Etc. I honestly don't understand this effort to belittle/denigrate...and to provoke and incite Finney. You do it. And a couple of other people do it. You can disagree with him. You can point to where hes wrong. You can say he went too far here or there. Maybe you have some smoking gun. But I'd be sceptical.]

You, on the other hand Mike, have always been straight and fair in my book - except for the occasional time you have, like the rest of us - got carried away

[Thanks That I'm not on the "Enemy's List" - although perhaps in the files. I'm also trying to fathom exactly what's happening and why
!]

"Belittle finney" ??? apart from the fact I think he's got a big enough gob to answer for himself, Mike, he does a good enough job of belittling himself.

And it's a bit odd you being so quick to defend him, but if he posts up photos and personal abuse of other posters you don't even criticize.

Mike - I've not doubted your concerns are genuine. But you don't do your cause, or that of reasonable argument, any service by siding with a nutter who is motivated by his own ego. Or by jumping on anyone who criticizes him whilst allowing him free reign to abuse other posters. Rise above it. It will give you the authority to give me the same advice ;)

Certainly not claiming perfection. But I disagree with the assessment. I think you would find that Finney and a couple of other posters would also disagree and feel they had been critiqued.

But whatever its faults, I would say this site still stands as a shining beacon - and compared to another site in particular: Stands head and shoulders in its tolerance of other opinions; non-belittlement of posters with whom one disagrees; not trying to skew things or hide things when counter to; being TRULY Indepedent. And specifically, this site in its non-tolerance of racism, anti-Semitism and homophobia, not to mention glorification of fan violence, etc. Now to the best of my knowledge I have never seen public criticisms by you of the homophobia and anti-Semitism and racism that has been posted on other sites. It's not enough to not hold those views. Should publicly, unequivocally have spoken out.

Mike - as I told you in our private exchange the other day - and maybe you are shaming me to admit it - I rarely see the other sites. If you point to me anything said there I shall happily condemn prejudice. Always have. Whether it's finney's homophobic campaign by using the camp character in Little Britain after my posts or some twit on WRTRB. I am sure you would do the same too.

Oh, and Mike, do you agree that posting photos of Susan Boyle and saying it looks like Funky is personal abuse, and belittlement, by Finney, which you should have criticised in at least the same terms as your refrain of me for criticising not his looks but his actions, or do you apply a double standard?

Fair play Mike, and well done for being even handed on that occasion
I don't know klr, and I don't recall him ever being abusive to me, but Iv'e seen some pretty strong stuff from him directed at those he disagreed with. I hope he won't treat it as a back handed insult for me to say it's not really in the same league, or stooping to the same gutter level, as finney's campaign though

Funnily enough, I like Rioja and Spanish wine in general. Currently consuming a Torla Rioja actually. ;D

I do have a lovely looking Barolo in a wooden presentation box with all the tools to go with it, present from our old Rome office. Must open it one day but it needs to be a special day.
