QPR 3 Huddersfield 1
QPR survived a ferocious second-half onslaught to collect all three points in a pulsating clash with big-spending Huddersfield at Loftus Road.
New Town boss Steve Bruce gave six players their debuts for this opening encounter and it took them an hour to gel together.
By then, they were 2-0 down but for the rest of the match, they created enough chances to have won this game twice over.
QPR started brightly with Gavin Peacock's shot flying inches wide on three minutes while Rob Steiner beat two markers before scuffing his left foot shot two minutes later.
They were rewarded for their dominance on 15 minutes.
Chris Lucketti's headed clearance fell to Jermaine Darlington and he ghosted past two defenders before firing in a 20-yarder for his first ever senior goal.
Huddersfield were stunned into retaliation and on 20 minutes Kenny Irons put Marcus Stewart in the clear as Rangers appealed for offside. However, Danny Maddix sprinted back to twice block the striker's efforts.
George Donis got in front of Darlington at the far post only for Ludek Miklosko to snatch the ball off his foot, while Chris Beech hit the foot of the Rangers post as they tried to get back into the game.
However, just as the Yorkshiremen were getting on top, QPR grabbed a second goal on 38 minutes.
Ian Baraclough stormed down the left and his perfect cross was nodded down by Steiner to Huddersfield-born Chris Kiwomya who forced the ball over the line from close range.
Huddersfield came out for the second half with all guns blazing.
James Vincent fired a free-kick just wide while Donis was denied by a brilliant tackle by Baraclough all within eight minutes of the restart. At the other end, Steiner should have done better with a free header after Kiwomya's fine run and cross.
Clyde Wijnhard tested Miklosko with a glancing header on 58 minutes and he reduced the arrears on 65 minutes when he latched on to a throw to thump a shot into the roof of the net for a debut goal.
Ben Thornley came off the bench to spark even more life into the visitors and it looked only a matter of time before they grabbed the equaliser.
Thornley played a brilliant one-two with Wijnhard before seeing his shot brilliantly saved by Miklosko on 68 minutes, Irons hit a free-kick just wide and Stewart was denied twice, once by the keeper and once by Tim Breacker's hack off the line.
Rangers weathered the storm and on 79 minutes they wrapped up the points.
Kiwomya got down the left again and his cross was met by Peacock whose stooping header easily beat Nico Vaesen.

August 7, 2004 Sporting Life QPR 1 Rotherham 1
Paul Shaw's debut goal was enough to earn Rotherham a 1-1 draw with QPR after a wonder save from Millers goalkeeper Mike Pollitt in the dying stages.
Shaw's first-half header equalised an early opener from Gareth Ainsworth and Rotherham looked comfortable for a share of the points until the final few minutes.
But it took an excellent fingertip stop from Pollitt, at full stretch, to deny Kevin Gallen an 86th-minute winner.
Teething problems with the club's new stadium security firm CES meant hundreds of fans were locked out of Loftus Road because Rangers could not guarantee sufficient stewarding.
And the home side could have been behind seconds after kick-off when Darren Garner floated a free-kick into the penalty area for Chris Swailes to flick goalwards.
But the Rotherham player's header was tipped around his far post by startled goalkeeper Chris Day and Rangers cleared the danger.
Ainsworth settled the early nerves by giving the home side a fifth-minute lead with a header from Richard Johnson's left-wing cross despite suspicions he was offside.
But Rotherham hit back in the 16th minute when Rangers failed to clear another corner and Shaw was on hand at the near post for a simple header.
The 30-year-old Sheffield United midfielder was making his Millers debut after signing on a three-month loan deal.
Johnson tested Rotherham keeper Pollitt's handling with a rasping drive from distance, but the visitors looked the brighter side after their goal.
Rangers, by contrast, were disjointed and messy, and their passing game began to desert them in the blistering heat.
But Paul Furlong forced a fine fingertip save from Pollitt with a looping lob which almost caught him out as the first-half drew to a close.
Ainsworth tried to lift his side with a purposeful run and cross-shot as the second-half got under way, but there was no one there to convert.
Sedgwick and Richard Barker both threatened at the other end before Phil Gilchrist headed a Garner free-kick over the woodwork.
QPR boss Ian Holloway went for broke by making three substitutions late on, throwing on striker Tony Thorpe and winger Kevin McLeod, as well as defender Georges Santos.
And with Rangers pressing for a winner in the dying stages, Pollitt had to perform heroics in the Rotherham goal to deny Gallen.
And the visitors were stout enough to hold on for a hard-fought draw despite renewed pressure in stoppage time.
