Report: Spencer to be Timbers first MLS coachPortland Business Journal - by Erik Siemers Business Journal staff writer
Signs point towards John Spencer becoming the Portland Timbers first head coach in Major League Soccer.
The Houston Dynamo on Tuesday said Spencer left the club after more than four years as an assistant coach, according to a report on MLSSoccer.com, the league’s official website.
According to the report, several Dynamo players indicated that Spencer was headed to Oregon for a coaching role with the Timbers, who will join the league as an expansion franchise next year.
A Timbers spokesman couldn’t be reached for comment.
A news release from the Dynamo said Spencer left for “personal reasons.”
Spencer’s name first surfaced back in December after he turned down a chance to interview for the head coaching job with MLS’ DC United. He told the Houston Chronicle at the time that he had already set up an interview with another club.
Both the Chronicle and independent soccer journalist Ives Galarcep, at his site Soccerbyives.net, have linked Spencer to the Portland job.
Spencer is a Glasgow, Scotland, native whose four years with the Dynamo included two MLS Cup championships. According to the MLSsoccer.com, Spencer had an 18-year playing career with Glasgow Rangers in Scotland; Chelsea, Queens Park Rangers and Everton in England, and the MLS’ Colorado Rapids.
