Italy to limit non-EU players

The Italian football federation voted to change the rules governing Italian soccer clubs to allow only one non-European Union player per club in the upcoming season reports
Reuters. This is the federation’s response to the poor showing of the national team in the World Cup and is said to be an effort to encourage the development of local talent. Before the rules change, two non-EU players were allowed per club.
Serie A, which is in the first ever term of governing itself, has a statement from President Maurizio Beretta on its website. "The reduction was approved by the federation board with Serie A voting against. The decision leaves a bitter taste in the mouth and does not resolve Italian soccer's problems."
The Italian club Inter Milan won the May Champions League final without an Italian player in the starting lineup; Italy’s new coach Cesare Prandelli has indicated that he will be willing to consider the eligibility of foreign players for the Azzurri if the need arises.
