Foyle Cup: Festival of fun

Over 4,000 young footballers, coaches and spectators converged upon Londonderry’s Guildhall Square yesterday as the biggest ever Foyle Cup officially kicked off with the traditional opening parade through the city.

Since its inception in 1992, the tournament, which began life as a one-day competition for only eight teams, has become one of Derry’s major success stories and this year a record 144 teams will compete in what is now one of Europe’s most highly regarded international youth soccer tournaments.

For tournament chairman, Michael Hutton, yesterday’s parade represented one of the highlights of the event.

“I take great pleasure in watching the parade through our city centre each year,” he explained.

“It brings together so many kids from all over Ireland, the UK, Europe and the rest of the world under the banner of sport. It’s great to see children from the Shankill, the Falls, the Fountain and the Bogside come together.

“Kids from the North, the South — kids of all colours, creeds, nationalities parade together under the banner of sport. Northern Ireland needs much more of this.

“When you consider the impact the recession is having on spending power globally, it is remarkable that this year we will have our highest-ever entry of teams including five teams travelling from Canada and America.”

Although there are a host of clubs from England, Scotland, Europe and the US, the chairman continues to maintain that Irish League and Airtricity League sides also come back year after year.

“Each year, the international appeal of the Foyle Cup is witnessed more and more as teams from far and beyond travel to the event,” he added.

“Whilst this interest is immensely important and pleasing, what is even more gratifying is that more and more of our senior Irish league and Airtricity league clubs recognise the opportunity being afforded them to prepare young players to compete against top class opposition.”

The opening games didn’t disappoint the large crowds gathered across the city and the teams ensured spectators had something to watch with an average of 3.5 goals per game in the opening sets of matches.

Hosts, Derry & District Youth League surprised their illustrious opponents from Barcelona, romping home with a resounding 6-1 victory at under-16.

It's far too early in the tournament to say who the main threats will be, but United States sides Everton America and Ramapo Valley looked well organised and defeated local outfits, Bertie Peacock Youth League and Inishowen Youth League respectively.

Barry Coyle ensured Armagh City got a point against ANB Soccer of Canada, cancelling out Mark Rancovic's opener.

Ryan Smith was the hero for Lisburn Distillery scoring the only goal against Waterford Schools League.

U16S REACH QUARTER FINALS

Rangers' Under 16s, under the guidance of Marc Bircham, yesterday reached the Quarter Final of the Foyle Cup where they will now face Armagh City for a place in the last four.

Victories on Tuesday over Glentoran (4-0), and yesterday over Ballymoney United (1-0) and Donegal Colts (2-1), saw the youngsters win their group with a maximum points total.

QPR's Quarter Final kicks off at 3pm this afternoon (Thursday) at Ardmore and their result will be posted later on www.qpr.co.uk.

Foyle Cup: Derry on spot to home in on final

North West rivals Derry City and Finn Harps came through tight semi-finals to claim their place in the under-19 final at Ardmore tonight (7.00pm).

Derry needed penalties to overcome Arklow Town and Finn Harps defeated Institute at Riverside by a single goal.

The under-16 final will be an Anglo Irish affair after two English and two teams from the Republic made it through to the last four yesterday.

St Kevin’s, Dublin and NECSL of Meath will go head to head for the honour of competing against tournament favourites QPR or their fellow Coca Cola Championship side Hull City.

Whoever makes the final will face stiff opposition from the equally determined St Kevin’s Boys or NECSL.

Ramapo Valley lead the American challenge, qualifying for the Plate semi-final against Newhill from Belfast, having comfortably accounted for Shankill in their quarter-final.

Local hosts Derry & District Youth FA meet Waterford Schools in the other Plate semi.

In the Under-12 tournament there was total domination by Irish clubs with seven of the eight quarter-finalists from Irish shores — Hearts the odd team out.

Derry & District Youth FA have yet to concede a goal, are scoring freely and must at this stage be highly fancied to make the final.

First though they need to be victorious over Cavan Youth League. Other Irish quarter-finalists include Linfield, Dungannon United, Lucan United, NW Coleraine and St Kevin’s Boys.

At Under-14 level it was the turn of the Scottish clubs to show their worth with two of the four semi-final places going to Celtic and Hearts.

Linfield maintained the Ulster interest and they will now face Hearts, while Inishowen Youth will take on Celtic.

U16S REACH FINAL

QPR Under 16s are one match away from their first piece of silverware this season after beating Hull City 2-1 in the Semi-Final of the Foyle Cup this afternoon.

Justin Keories opened the scoring for the R's before an own goal doubled the advantage.

Marc Bircham's youngsters maintained their lead until the 80th minute when Hull halved the deficit.

Despite a nervy finish to the match, Rangers deservedly held onto their lead.

Following the match, Bircham told http://www.qpr.co.uk: "We've done well to get this far. When we have played some of the local sides, the games have started at 100mph.

"It's a bit of a Cup Final for these teams, but we've handled that and, as the matches have settled down, we've got into our style of play.

"Against Hull - who won their own league comfortably last season - it was a very physical battle and they play a very direct style.

"We've got quite a big team ourselves but we like to get the ball down and play. That's no disrespect to Hull, they play a more direct style, and I haven't got a problem with that at all.

"It was a good challenge for the players to overcome, and I was really pleased with how they did today."

QPR face NECSL in tomorrow's Final at Brandywell Stadium, Derry, kicking off at 12noon.

Bircham insists winning the trophy isn't his priority.

"Obviously it would be nice but that's not why we are out here," he added. "We are here to play some games and get these lads used to playing football in the right way.

U16S LOSE IN FINAL

Marc Bircham's Under 16s lost on penalties to NECSL in the Foyle Cup Final this afternoon, after the match ended goalless.

After defeating Hull City 2-1 in yesterday's Semi-Final, the young R's went into the match at Brandywell Stadium in Derry full of confidence, and did themselves - and QPR - proud, despite losing 5-4 in the shoot-out.
