1958
England lose 1-0 to the USSR in Gothenburg in a second place play-off for a slot in the quarter-finals. Chelsea winger Peter Brabrook comes into the team for his debut along with Wolves inside-forward Peter Broadbent, but Bobby Charlton, severely affected by the recent Munich air-crash, is harshly left out and is left kicking his heels on the touchline. Brabrook almost becomes an instant hero with a shot that strikes the Russian post and then bounces into keeper Lev Yashin’s hands. In the second-half, he has a goal disallowed before the Russians score the winning goal when Anatoli Ilyin of Spartak Moscow shoots in off a post to put England out of the World Cup. When England arrive back in London, Walter Winterbottom is met at the airport by his young son, Alan, who asks the question on the lips of thousands of football fans: ‘Daddy, why didn’t you play Bobby Charlton?’

The USA defeat Mexico 2-0. Brian McBride scores the first and they add a second in the 65th minute as Eddie Lewis sends in a trademark left footed cross for Landon Donovan to head home.
Steve Staunton confirms his retirement from international football after winning his 102nd cap in the Republic of Ireland's World Cup exit to Spain the night before. He says, "I don't think my knee could handle a few more years of this to be honest."
1970
Italy defeat West Germany 4-3 in a World Cup semi-final that has gone down in footballing folklore as ‘the game of the century’. The match is commemorated by a plaque at the Azteca Stadium that reads: “The Azteca Stadium pays homage to the National Teams of Italy (4) and Germany (3), who starred in the 1970 FIFA World Cup, the “Game of the Century”.
