Leading the Millwall team out onto the Wembley pitch on Saturday will be 11 year-old George Mizen, brother of Jimmy Mizen, the Millwall fan who was a tragic victim of violent crime two years ago.
George has been chosen to be the official mascot as part of Millwall's continuing efforts alongside the Jimmy Mizen Foundation to raise awareness of, and ultimately combat, violent street crime.
In a letter to the club, Barry and Margeret Mizen, Jimmy's parents, describe their ongoing campaign to make a difference.
"We are becoming more involved in various projects and movements, but all with the same goal, to bring changes to our communities, from where they are to where they should be.
It is our firm belief that the vast majority of our young people are fine and decent citizens who also despair of the violence and confrontation that is becoming ever more part of their lives. We work through the Jimmy Mizen Foundation, Families Utd, Kids Task Force and London Citizens to bring safety to our communities through visits to schools, youth groups and prisons with personal testimony and helping to develop educational resources and "safe havens".
We have also been working with the Millwall Community Trust and have spoken to a group of specially invited young people before a recent home game. Millwall, and another local club Charlton, are good examples of the community work that many football clubs are engaged in. Professional Footballers have the influence to encourage changes in attitudes in our communities to make them safer and more civil.
We want to express our sincere thanks for the decision to ask our son George to be the mascot for the Millwall team at this Saturday's Division One Play Off final at Wembley.
This is a great honour and yet another example of the support and help that Millwall Football Club has given to our family following the death of our son in May 2008. It is no exaggeration to say that the recognition of our circumstances and the support of the entire Millwall community have kept our family from sinking under the weight of what happened."
We hope you enjoy your day out with us George!
