Ollie will make Premier League - Evatt
Friday 21st May 2010
Blackpool defender Ian Evatt believes boss Ian Holloway is destined for the Premier League.
Holloway's arrival at Bloomfield Road last summer looked to be a huge gamble that could backfire spectacularly.
Blackpool had spent the previous season fighting relegation and were again rated among the favourites for the drop while Holloway had been out of the game after presiding over Leicester's slide into League One in May 2008.
Yet the charismatic Bristolian, 47, has poured so much confidence, energy and belief into his players they will go into tomorrow's Championship play-off final against Cardiff with no fear whatsoever.
Evatt said: "It's been crazy, really. The gaffer came in during pre-season and picked the boys up straightaway.
"When he told us how he wanted to employ a more expansive style of play we looked at him like he was an alien.
"I didn't think we were capable of playing 4-3-3 but things just clicked and I've never seen a team improve so much, right from pre-season to end of the season.
"The gaffer has to take a lot of the credit for that because the boys have responded to him so well.
"He's always been an enthusiastic person and I played under him at QPR.
"Players are only human beings, we have off days.
"Sometimes you come into training not feeling great but you see the gaffer and he just picks you up straightaway.
"He loves his job and he loves us as players.
"We've done the best we can to repay the faith he has shown in us."
So Evatt was not in the least bit surprised to see bookmakers name Holloway on their list of candidates to replace Gianfranco Zola.
"He's got every right to be linked with other jobs because of what he has done here," added Evatt.
"It goes for the players as well and it's up to us all to keep impressing everybody like we've been doing all season.
"But Ian Holloway deserves to be a Premier League manager.
"The knowledge he has of the game and his attention to detail is unbelievable.
"Whether he does it with us or another club in the future, I think he deserves to be a Premier League manager."
Blackpool would be the smallest club in the top flight since the formation of the Premier League if they were to beat Cardiff.
This season their average home crowd of 8,611 was the second lowest in the Championship - only Sc**thorpe attracted fewer spectators.
Yet Evatt added: "Obviously we're not on the biggest budget and we're not the highest-paid players in this division, but we've got a chance.
"We're happy to be underdogs because we have been all season and maybe that brings the best out in us."
