Gregory signs on to coach Ashdod By Haaretz Sports Staff Soccer / Premier League John Gregory, the English manager who took over Premier League side Maccabi Ahi Nazareth this past season, agreed to a three-year contract with FC Ashdod on Tuesday. The 54-year-old, who managed Ahi Nazareth since November, took a team languishing deep in last place and nearly led it out of the relegation zone. Ahi Nazareth will compete next season in the second-tier National League. Gregory will replace Yossi Mizrahi, who parted ways with Ashdod following a meeting with club chairman Yossi Ben Zaken earlier this week. After leading the club to the upper-tier playoff and the State Cup semifinal, Mizrahi was expected to stay on for another season. Yet management reconsidered after five consecutive defeats in the playoff round. Mizrahi's name has been linked with possible job openings at Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Ashkelon, which was promoted to next season's Premier League after finishing second in the National League. Prior to his arrival in Israel, Gregory made managerial stops in Portsmouth, Plymouth Argyle, Aston Villa, Derby County and Queens Park Rangers. In 1998 he led Aston Villa to the UEFA Cup. Two years later, he took Villa to the FA Cup final, losing to Chelsea. www.haaretz.com/print-edition/sports/gregory-signs-on-to-coach-ashdod-1.291132
