On this day 16th April► 17th►18th►19th►20th►21st►22nd►15 April 1893 By beating Burnley 3-1 in the last match of the season Sunderland became the first club to score 100 goals in a League season. They were, not surprisingly, League Champions that year having won 22 of their matches and lost only four. They finished 11 points clear of runners-up Preston North End. 15 April 1950 When Billy Moir, Bolton Wanderers' inside-right, played for Scotland against England at Hampden Park it was the only senior match in which he ever appeared in his native country. It was also his only international match. He was developed by Bolton during the War and played for them until 1955 (including the 1953 Cup Final) when he became player-manager at Stockport County where he remained until he was sacked in July 1960. Played in 394 League matches and scored 144 goals; 325 and 118 for Bolton. 15 April 1950 58,000 saw the first schoolboy international to be played at Wembley when England beat Scotland 8-2 after being held to a 1-1 draw at half time. Scotland's McDonald became the first schoolboy to score at Wembley when he converted a penalty after four minutes and England's first Wembley schoolboy goal was scored by left-half Clamp. 15 April 1950 England beat Scotland 1-0 in the Home Championship. This ensures both England and Scotland qualify for the World Cup Finals as the top two in the Championship, which was designated a World Cup Qualifying Group, would go to Brazil. However the Scottish FA decided they would only go if they won the Championship and refused to enter the World Cup Finals. 15 April 1970 Hampden Park attracted a record crowd of 135,826 for the European Cup semi-final between Celtic and Leeds United. 15 April 1967 England suffer their first defeat since the 1966 World Cup win as Scotland win 3-2 at Wembley ======================================= 15 April 1989 During the FA Cup semi final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough 96 people die in the crush at the Leppings Lane end of the ground. =======================================

16 April 1973 Bobby Charlton of Manchester United and England announces that he will retire at the end of the current season. 16 April 1975 England beat Cyprus 5-0 in a European Championship Qualifier at Wembley. Malcom McDonald scores all five an England record. 16 April 1983 Oxford United chairman Robert Maxwell announced that he had bought a controlling interest in Reading FC and that he intended to merge the two clubs under the name Thames Valley Royals. The scheme never came to fruition. 16 April 1984 AFC Bournemouth announced that they intended to poll their supporters with regard to reinstating the club's previous name of Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic. Formed in 1899 as Boscombe FC they had become Bournemouth and Boscombe United in 1923 and retained that name until 1971 when they had become AFC Bournemouth. After the poll no further name change was made. 16 April 1997 A Steve Claridge goal after ten minutes of extra time in the Coca Cola Final replay against Middlesbrough at Hillsborough was enough to see his Leicester City side lift the trophy. In the first game at Wembley on April 6th Middlesbrough had looked set to win the Cup in extra time until a late Emile Heskey goal with two minutes left had tied the score at 2-2. 16 April 1998 Chelsea beat Vicenza in the second leg of the Cup Winners Cup semi final 3-1 to progress to the final 3-2 on aggregate.

16 April 1973 Bobby Charlton of Manchester United and England announces that he will retire at the end of the current season. Non QPR but my first ever game i went to was Bobby Charltons last game for Man U v Chelsea at Stamford Bridge ( i was only 6 and my mum is a mad Man U supporter) They lost 1-0 to a Peter Osgood goal if i remember rightly. I recall that even though we were stood at the back of the ground the fans lifted me right down to the front at the start of the game and then took me back up to my mum at the end of it. I dont remember it being segregated either.......God i feel old now

17 April 1897 Aston Villa play their first match at a new stadium, Villa Park. The first division match against Blackburn Rovers ends in a 3-0 win for the home side.
17 April 1909 At the end of the Scottish Cup Final between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park the score stood at 2-2. The crowd anticipated extra time and when this was not forthcoming they rioted destroying both goals and generally damaging the ground. At a subsequent inquiry it was decided that the trophy would be witheld for that season. There had been no instruction prior to the match that extra time should be played.
17 April 1922 When Swansea Town beat Bristol Rovers 8-1 in Division Three South Jimmy Collins scored four of Swansea's goals. This tally represented exactly half of his total for the club in a career which lasted from 1919 until 1930. He was normally a half-back but had appeared at inside-right for this match.
17 April 1925 Centre-forward Bobby Gurney signed for Sunderland from Bishop Aukland. He had to wait until 1929, when Halliday left for Arsenal, to establish himself in the side but once he did he was the club's leading scorer for seven consecutive seasons. Won a League Championship medal in 1936 and a Cup winners' medal the following year. Gurney made his only England appearance in 1935 against Scotland. When the Second War began he had played in 348 League matches and scored 205 goals. After the War he had spells as manager of both Harlepools United and Darlington.
17 April 1937 A crowd of 149,547 saw Scotland beat England 3-1 at Hampden Park. This figure has never been officially exceeded in Britain although it is estimated that there were some 200,000 at Wembley in 1923 when the crowd broke in for the Cup Final. The Hampden Park attendance was a world record at the time but was beaten in 1950 when 200,000 watched the World Cup Final between Brazil and Uruguay in Rio de Janeiro. England led the Hampden match 1-0 at half time with a Freddie Steele goal but Scotland came back with goals from Frank O'Donnell and Bob McPhail(2).
17 April 1948 The home nation - England win the first ever European Youth Tournament overcoming Holland 3-0 in the final played at White Hart Lane
17 April 1990 Juventus urge UEFA not to ban Liverpool from European Competitions for three more years than the other English Clubs. The European ban on English clubs after the Heysel Stadium disaster is set to be lifted at the end of the season.
17 April 1997 To the chagrin of the German Football Federation England win the right to bid for the 2006 World Cup Finals. They maintain that there had been a gentlemans agreement that Germany would not bid against England to host the 1996 European Nations Finals in return for England not bidding for the 2006 World Cup Finals.

17 April 1976 Norwich 3 QPR 2 - No more need be said
17 April 2006 Norwich 3 QPR 2
QPR Official Site On the 30th anniversary of Norwich's shocking win over Rangers which helped deny the Hoops the title, another unjust 3-2 win was seen.
It was 30 years to the day when Norwich ended QPR's title dreams during the 1975-76 season, that Rangers found themselves once again robbed at Carrow Road.
Gareth Ainsworth had given Rangers the lead on the stroke of half time when he shot across goal to leave the ball nestling in the far corner of the net.
The Norwich fans departed to the concourse up in arms with some anti-Worthington chants, but it was all smiles for the Rangers fans.
Early in the second half, Rangers had a strong appeal for a second denied when Paul Furlong's toe poke seemingly sent the ball over the line.
But Rangers didn't have to wait for long to extend their lead and Lee Cook stepped up with a superb solo goal to put Rangers further ahead.
But when Darren Huckerby struck on 77 minutes, it was the first of Norwich's come back.
Robert Earnshaw's strike five minutes from time was then followed by his second a minute before full time to condemn Rangers to an utterly undeserved defeat.
Gary Waddock had to make several changes going in to the game.
Injuries to Ian Evatt, Richard Langley, Scott Donnelly and Shabazz Baidoo meant that Waddock was left shuffling a depleted pack.
George Santos came into the starting line up for the first time under the Caretaker Manager and Paul Furlong returned to the attack alongside Saturday's goalscorer Marc Nygaard.
Steve Lomas also returned to the action as did Marcus Bignot as Rangers looked to pick up something from their penultimate away game of the season.
Although Norwich had the better of the early running, the Canaries failed to trouble Paul Jones in the Rangers goal.
Andy Hughes sent a weak shot on target, but Jones hardly had to move in his quest to gather the ball.
With ten minutes on the clock, Gareth Ainsworth began to open up City at the back.
The winger cut inside twice in quick succession; losing the ball in the box on the first occasion and setting up Marc Nygaard on the second.
Despite the lofty Dane's towering jump, he couldn't hit the target with his header and the ball sailed off for a goal kick.
Lee Cook then went close with a free kick just outside the area.
Choosing to whip the ball over the diminutive Robert Earnshaw in the wall, the former Cardiff man somehow managed to get a head on the ball to send it out for a corner.
From the resulting set piece, it was easy pickings for Paul Gallacher at the near post.
A spell of subdued football followed with little to report, but Ainsworth was again in the thick of the action when he latched on to a Mauro Milanese cross, only for his header to be deflected wide of the upright.
Norwich then came at Rangers with a training ground free kick.
Carl Robinson squared the ball for Darren Huckerby, but the Norwich man couldn't keep his effort down and the ball was blasted high into the Barclay Stand.
But it was Rangers who had the last laugh on the stroke of half time when Gareth Ainsworth's low drive flew across the goal and into the far corner.
With the whistle blown seconds later, Rangers had the upper hand going into the tunnel.
There was a scare for Rangers at the start of the second half when Dan Shittu went down clutching his leg, but thankfully the big defender was able to continue.
Moments later, Rangers had a strong shout for a second ignored when Lee Cook's corner was headed goalwards by Nygaard.
Gallacher palmed the shot down and Furlong was on hand to dig the shot over the line - or so it seemed.
As the referee waved play on, Furlong was left on his knees banging his head against the post in frustration.
That goal would certainly have calmed the nerves as Norwich were starting to get behind Rangers at the back.
Huckerby was clean through and shot straight on goal, but somehow Jones was on hand to pull off another of his point blank wonder saves to deny him.
Suddenly this was an end to end game and Gallacher made a hash of a clearance, punching the ball against Gary Doherty's head, which then deflected the ball against the bar.
Then, in a moment of magic, Lee Cook appeared with a late shout for goal of the season - it's just a shame the votes have already been cast!
Cook picked up the ball just inside the half and merrily made his way towards the Norwich goal.
The winger skipped over a Hughes challenge to leave him grounded and sold Doherty the dummy leaving his free to shoot.
Cook then picked his spot and curled the ball into the far corner before reeling away to perform one of his wacky celebrations.
But it was just like Rangers to live dangerously and they allowed Norwich back into the game.
Jones' punch failed to leave the box and as the ball fell to Huckerby, his looping header fell behind the Rangers stopper and into the back of the net.
Suddenly it was Milanese and Shittu both going close in quick succession as Rangers caused problems for Norwich form every possible area.
But as has been the story of Rangers season, missed chances proved costly.
McVeigh's cross fell kindly for Earnshaw and the City frontman stroked the ball home to leave Rangers reeling.
His second four minutes later left Rangers utterly devastated.
For those who weren't here, do not let the scoreline deceive you. Rangers could and should have won this tie on countless occasions and put on a valiant and enthralling display at times.

April 17, 1976: Norwich 3 QPR 2: The day that QPR effectively lost out on the First Division Championship (although Wolves did their bit to deny QPR the Championship - by falling Liverpool at the very death - and of course in truth, every point is worth the same, whenever it's picked up during the season).
From Rothmans Football Yearbook " QPR lose at Norwich, and as Liverpool beat Stoke 5-3, they go to the top of Division One." Rothmans
QPR's Prime Team: Parkes Clement Webb McLintock Gillard Francis Masson Hollins Thomas Bowles Givens - Leach
The Norwich defeat was QPR's first defeat since January 24 1976 when West Ham defeated QPR 1-0. From January 24, 1976 to April 24, 1976 QPR's record was: 13 Wins...1 Draw...and the 2-3 Norwich defeat on April 17, 1976)
From Norwich City FC Years
[NB: These were Norwich statistics in 1975-76: They finished 10th with W 16 D 10 L 16 GF 58-GA 58 42 points (2 points for win) - From Norwich City Years: "Norwich immediately established themselves as a first division outfit during the 1975 – 76 campaign as they enjoyed a fine season, finishing it off in tenth position. They reached the fifth round of the FA Cup, however suffered defeat against Bradford City. Kevin Keelan was in fine form for the club through out the campaign. The 1976 – 1977 season saw Norwich struggle towards the end and managed to finish off in 16th position and a third round finish in the FA Cup." - Norwich City
John Hollins on that Norwich Loss - from an Interview with QPR Net "...If I have to say we lost it then I would say we lost it at Norwich, I can remember one of their players, they used to call him Diesel, he used to run through brick walls that fella! He never scored all that many for them and he hit a shot which Parkes had covered but it came off Dave Clement’s back and flipped over him into the net. When they made it 3-1 it was miles offside too. Gerry pulled it back to 3-2 then we hit the bar. That one point would have got us through." QPR Net
Gerry Francis Said a couple of years ago:
Mirror/Aidan Magee - Monday, April 17, 2006 "FRANCIS WAITS 30 YEARS FOR REVENGE "GERRY FRANCIS wants QPR to thrash Norwich today - to help him ease 30 years of pain. The former England skipper was a key part of the exciting Rangers side which narrowly missed out on the old First Division title in 1976. And QPR all but blew their hopes on April 17 that year by losing 3-2 in a Carrow Road thriller - before being pipped by Liverpool shortly after. Incredibly the two sides meet again today on the same pitch all these years later - but with little more than Championship pride to play for. Rangers would probably have been the smallest club ever to be crowned league champions, in the end finishing just a point behind the Reds. Dave Sexton's side was packed with glorious names from the Seventies like Francis, Frank McLintock, Phil Parkes, David Webb and Stan Bowles. Francis said: "It's amazing that the fixture list has thrown this up exactly 30 years to the day, and at Carrow Road too. "I remember the day well. It was a great match but it was destined not to go our way. "It was our only defeat in the last 17 games of that season. We then beat Leeds and Arsenal to finish the season. "Then Liverpool played at Wolves 10 days later needing a win. They were losing until 15 minutes from time and then they scored three. "It was unfair because now all the teams would play concurrently on the final day, but Liverpool knew exactly what they had to do. "They were great times, with great players and some great haircuts - in fact I've still got mine!" Mirror

18 April 1896 Heart of Midlothian signed Bobby Walker from Dalry Primrose. He was the greatest inside-forward in Scottish football in the period before the First War and was capped a then-record 29 times for Scotland between 1900 and 1913. That record stood until it was beaten by Alan Morton after the Second War when many more internationals were played. Walker played in the Hearts side which won the Scottish League in 1897 and the Scottish Cup in 1901 and 1906.
18 April 1903 Bury beat Derby County 6-0 in the F.A. Cup Final played at Crystal Palace and established a record which still stands for the biggest Cup Final victory.
18 April 1936 Morton centre-forward Jack Calder scored eight goals in his club's Scottish Second Division match against Raith Rovers. Remarkably he did not establish himself with Morton and the same was true when he had a short stay with Bolton Wanderers.
18 April 1954 Death of Liverpool manager George Kay after a long illness. He was 66. His playing career had started with Bolton Wanderers in 1910 but after only three games he moved to Distillery in Northern Ireland where he remained until the First War gaining a Belfast City Cup medal in 1913 and representing the Irish League on three occasions. Joined West Ham United during the War and when the club was elected to the Second Division in 1919 he effectively returned to League football. He captained the Hammers when they won promotion in 1923 and appeared in the first Wembley Cup Final in the same year when the London side lost 2-0 to Bolton Wanderers. Retired in 1926 after 240 League appearances to become coach at Luton Town and then manager in 1929. In 1931 he took over at Southampton and was appointed manager at Liverpool in 1936. They were League Champions under his guidance in 1947.
18 April 1987 Ray Clemence currently at Tottenham Hotspur beats Pat Jennings record of appearances in senior British football when he plays his 1099th match in a 1-0 win over Charlton at White Hart Lane.
18 April 1993 Arsenal win the Coca Cola Cup when they beat Sheffield United 2-1 at Wembley. The win is marred when young defender Steve Morrow breaks his arm in the celebrations after the match.
18 April 1995 British Steel sponsors of Middlesbrough FC withdraw from the deal after it is revealed that the new stadium will be built with steel from Germany.

19 April 1897 Birmingham had their lowest recorded attendance when only 500 turned up to see them play Manchester City. In an ironic twist of fate their local rivals Aston Villa opened Villa Park on the same day. 19 April 1927 Rangers signed Scottish international inside-forward Bob McPhail from Airdrieonians. In a peacetime career which spanned 1924 to 1939 he became the highest scoring inside-forward in Scottish League history with 307 goals in 462 matches. This was second only to centre-forward McGrory's 410. He won a Scottish Cup medal with Airdrie in 1924 and, after his move to Rangers, he won a further six Cup medals, nine League Championship medals and 17 Scottish caps. His Rangers record read 223 goals in 354 matches. Joined the Ibrox coaching staff when he retired during the Second War. 19 April 1957 Juventus paid a total of £65,000 for Leeds United's brilliant Welsh international John Charles. Signed for Leeds in 1948 as a centre-half and made his League debut that season and his international debut in the following one becoming the youngest Wales player ever in the process. In 1952 he converted to centre-forward scoring 26 goals that season and 42 (club record) in the next. From then on he played either position and was outstanding in both. In Italy he played 297 League games and scored 151 goals. He returned to Leeds in 1962 for £53,000 but could not settle and returned to Italy with Roma after four months. A year later he was back in Britain when Cardiff City signed him in August 1963 and in three seasons at Ninian Park he played 67 times and scored 11 goals. Played 38 times for Wales between 1949 and 1965, for Great Britain against the Rest Of Europe in 1956 and for the Italian League against both the English and Scottish Leagues in 1960. 19 April 1958 Death of Billy Meredith at the age of 81. He was a legend in hi own lifetime and was considered one of the greatest outside-rights of all time. He was signed by Manchester City in 1894, moved to Manchester United in 1905 and returned to City in 1921. Appeared for Wales 51 times between 1895 and 1920 missing only one game during that period; against England in 1906 when he was suspended for allegedly offering a bribe to Alec Leake of Aston Villa. He won F.A. Cup medals with both Manchester clubs and made his last appearance in the competition in 1924 when he was nearly 50 years old. Known as the Welsh Wizard he played in 669 League matches and scored over 200 goals. 19 April 1958 At the age of 16 years and 163 days Peter Bullock became the youngest player to appear for Stoke City when he played against Swansea City 19 April 1977 Liverpool become only the third English team to reach a European Cup Final when they beat FC Zurich 6-1 on aggregate. They will meet Borussia Moenchengladbach in the final. 19 April 1993 After crowd trouble in the recent World Cup Qualifying match between Turkey and England at Izmir, the home nation are banned from holding future international matches at that venue. 19 April 1995 In the European Cup Winners Cup semi finals Arsenal's David Seaman saves three penalties in the shoot-out against Sampdoria. This enables Arsenal to win the shoot-out and progress to the final 19 April 1998 Furore in the English press as Glen Hoddle the England manager reveals that Eileen Drewery, a well known faith healer, has been working with the England Squad.

20 April 1895 Robert Chatt scored the fastest ever F.A. Cup Final goal when he netted for Aston Villa after just 40 seconds of their match against West Bromwich Albion.
20 April 1925 West Ham United beat Southend United 2-0 at Upton Park in a benefit match for Essex County Cricket Club.
20 April 1929 Queens Park beat Third Lanark 8-3 in Scottish Division One with the help of two goals by J.B. McAlpine. 20 April 1955 Wales created a British Football record by playing two sets of brothers in their international with Ireland in Belfast. These were Ivor and Len Allchurch (Swansea City) and John and Mel Charles (Leeds United and Swansea City respectively). Wales won the match 3-2 with John Charles scoring a hat trick.

21 April 1909 Nottingham Forest inflicted a record defeat on Leicester Fosse when they beat them 12-0 in Division One. At a subsequent inquiry into the result it transpired that the Fosse players had been celebrating a colleague's wedding two days before the match.
21 April 1917 Kilmarnock beat Celtic 2-0 to end their run of 63 Scottish League matches without a defeat; a record for a British club.
21 April 1930 Leicester City and Arsenal drew 6-6 in Division One. This remains a record draw for the First Division although it was equalled as a Football League record when Charlton Athletic and Middlesbrough drew 6-6 in a Second Division game in 1960.
21 April 1930 Brentford beat Queens Park Rangers 3-0 and thus won all 21 of their home Football League matches in Division Three South. Despite this they only finished runners-up to Plymouth Argyle due to poor away form. Sunderland, Liverpool, Bury, Sheffield Wednesday and Small Heath have all won every home game in a season but the programmes were shorter in every case.
21 April 1934 Bill Imrie scored three goals in Newcastle United's 5-1 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers. This is the first recorded instance of a recognised half-back scoring a hat trick in a Football League match. Tommy McDonald, normally a forward, had previously done so when playing out of position for Newcastle United against Cardiff City on Christmas Day 1926. Imrie was a fine attacking wing or centre-half and in 400 English and Scottish League matches he scored 54 goals between 1927 and 1939. Besides Newcastle he played for St Johnstone, Blackburn Rovers and Swansea Town.

22 April 1904 Manchester United paid a then-record fee of £750 to Grimsby Town for Charlie Roberts. One of the great centre-halves of his era he captained United for eight years during which they won the League Championship in 1908 and 1911 and the F.A. Cup in 1909. In 1913 he was transferred to Oldham Athletic but the First War effectively ended his career. He was only capped three times for England (1904-05) and it has often been suggested that his close associations with the Player's Union restricted his selection. Died in August 1939 at the comparatively early age of 56. 22 April 1928 Hull City signed Sam Weaver from Denby Main. Equally at home at either wing-half or inside forward he soon came to the attention of Newcastle United who signed him in November 1929. It was there that he developed the long throw which made him famous; he could do 40 yards with ease. Whilst at St James' Park he won a F.A Cup winners medal in 1932 against Arsenal and also three England caps. Transferred to Chelsea in the summer of 1936 but the Second War robbed him of the second half of his career although he did play a couple of games for Stockport County in 1947. His final League record was 49 goals in 370 matches. 22 April 1933 Leicester City full-back Adam Black scored against Sunderland with a shot from inside his own half. The Foxes were his only senior club and he played 550 matches for them between 1919 and 1935. 22 April 1953 57,893, a record crowd for a League match at Ninian Park, saw Cardiff City and Arsenal draw 0-0. 22 April 1959 Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vic Rouse became the first Fourth Division player to win a full cap when he played for Wales against Ireland. He was once on Millwall's books but had to wait until he joined Palace to make his League debut. After 238 League games for them he moved to Northampton Town in 1963, Oxford United in 1964 and Leyton Orient in 1965.
