Routledge ready to shine
Winger gunning for Championship title with Magpies
Last updated: 12th April 2010
Wayne Routledge is determined to make the grade in the Premier League with Newcastle.
The 25-year-old winger will return to the top-flight next season after the Magpies secured automatic promotion last Monday.
Routledge, who netted Newcastle's fourth goal in the mauling of Blackpool on Saturday, has struggled to make an impact in England's top tier throughout his career after making just three starts in spells for Tottenham and Aston Villa.
But the former England U-21 international, who moved to St James' Park in the January transfer window from QPR, believes he can prove to be a worthy addition to Chris Hughton's side next term.
"You have to learn from the disappointments you go through," said Routledge, who also featured on loan for Portsmouth and Fulham in the top-flight.
"I know only too well how difficult it is going to be in the Premier League, but I cannot wait to play there again.
Frustrating
"It has been frustrating for me the last few times I have been there. All you want to do is play, everyone will tell you that, and I did not have the chance to do that.
"Hopefully I am a better player for that. I certainly feel that I have improved and now I just can't wait for next season.
"This has been a great move for me. I am enjoying playing now, especially when you have 50,000 cheering you on every week. It's a nice place to be just now."
Routledge has warned Newcastle's midweek opponents Reading that their hunger to win games has not diminished after securing promotion last week.
"We know we are promoted, but out next goal is to go up as champions," said the former Crystal Palace winger. "We have goals here and things we want to achieve.
"There will be no letting up. We are striving to become champions."
