CAN CHAIRBOYS CHANGE HABITS?
Posted on: 08.04.2010
'Old habits die hard,' goes that well-worn saying, and so as Wycombe Wanderers continue to linger dangerously in the Coca-Cola League 1 relegation zone Manager Gary Waddock is becoming ever more desperate for his team to scrap their potentially disastrous habit of failing to win matches.
As they head into their final six games of the season the Chairboys, having won only twice in their last 20 outings, are second bottom in the table. That's the same position that Waddock inherited when he took over from the departed Peter Taylor in mid-October, though at that stage of the season Wycombe were five points below the safety places whereas now the gap is nine points.
"It's frustrating," says Waddock, "because we've had games where we've been in positions to go on and win the match and we've not been able to do that. It becomes a habit - drawing and losing is a habit and at the moment we haven't got that habit of winning, of confidence and belief, whatever the case may be.
"At the moment we're in a rut and we're finding it difficult to win matches. We've been frustrated for a number of games over a period of time now. But that can't continue, we just can't have that - we have to change it. The games are running out and we're not winning ours, so you have to look at it like that."
Waddock's team have not won in eight matches and, though only three of the last seven have been lost, a meagre points haul of four from a possible 21 has left their League 1 lifeline dangling by a thread as they look to avoid dropping back down to League 2 only 12 months after being automatically promoted from the lower division.
It will take a dramatic reversal of form for the Chairboys to retain their current status, but with four of their last six games set to be played against survival rivals - Hartlepool United, Tranmere Rovers, Leyton Orient and Gillingham - Waddock has not given up hope as he prepares for the final throes of the relegation battle.
"We don't need snookers yet," insists the Manager, "but we have to win those games against the teams around us. We've not won for a little while now so it's about habit again, but we'll be going for it. We won't give up until it's out of our hands - and we will keep fighting until we either stay up or go down."
