Gary Johnson takes charge of relegated PeterboroughTom Dart
Peterborough United lost their Coca-Cola Championship status and gained a new manager yesterday. A 2-2 draw at Barnsley confirmed Peterborough’s relegation but Gary Johnson said he would be named their fourth manager of the season today.
Johnson left Bristol City last month after 4½ years at Ashton Gate and the 54-year-old will replace Jim Gannon, who succeeded Mark Cooper in February but decided not to make a long-term commitment to the club.
Plymouth Argyle are likely to join Peterborough in League Two after a 2-0 home defeat by Middlesbrough left them four points adrift of safety with four fixtures remaining. Sheffield Wednesday dropped into the bottom three after a late goal by Nicky Maynard resulted in defeat at home to Bristol City. Crystal Palace moved out of the relegation zone and leapfrogged Watford after coming from a goal down to beat Preston North End 3-1.
Since Nottingham Forest failed to win against Cardiff City, three points against Watford would have guaranteed promotion for West Bromwich Albion but Roberto Di Matteo’s side will have to wait a little longer for their fourth elevation to the top flight in eight years to be rubber-stamped.
Watford lost Tom Cleverley to injury and were reduced to ten men in the 79th minute when Jon Harley was dismissed for two bookable offences, but a superb strike from Danny Graham six minutes later gave them a surprise lead. However, Chris Brunt saved a point for the visiting team with a header five minutes into injury time.
“We just stay focused on our job,” Di Matteo, the West Brom manager, said. “There’s a lot of excitement around us. We’ve put ourselves in a good position but we’re not there yet.”
West Brom are away to Doncaster Rovers on Saturday, while Watford host Plymouth.
Doncaster lost 2-0 to Blackpool, who are a point outside the top six after wins for Swansea City and Leicester City. Swansea’s 3-0 victory over Sc**thorpe United was their first win in seven games while Leicester, who had lost their past four matches, thumped Queens Park Rangers 4-0 to keep Neil Warnock’s team in the relegation mix.
Nigel Clough, the Derby County manager, was sent to the stands by the referee for using foul and abusive language as his side lost 3-1 to Ipswich Town at Pride Park. Two minutes later, Stephen Pearson, the Derby midfield player, joined Clough for the same offence.
