STAT ATTACK – DISCIPLINE
Posted on: 02.04.2010
Discipline is an important aspect of the game for any player or club. This week we look at those individuals and teams who are falling foul of the referees and those that are not.
Coca-Cola Championship
The Steel City is living up to it's name with Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday committing the most number of fouls in the Coca-Cola Championship with 538 and 520 respectively. Sheffield United have collected the most yellow cards - 78, meaning roughly one booking for every seven fouls. Despite their high number of yellow cards, the Blades have had just one sending off all season. This is the second best record in the Championship, bettered only by their rivals Wednesday who despite a high number of fouls, haven't had a single red card.
West Bromwich Albion are second in the yellow card stakes with 77 and three red cards. Sc*n*horpe United have amassed seven red cards in their 39 games so far and the Iron have also conceded the most penalties this season with 10.
Swansea City are proving that you can have the best defensive record and the best disciplinary record - they have conceded fewer fouls than any other Championship club and have received just 56 yellows and four red cards in their 40 games.
Jay Bothroyd of Cardiff City has committed more fouls than any other player so far and has received ten yellow cards for his troubles. Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam has 11 yellow cards to his name and is the most booked player in the Championship. Crystal Palace defender Clint Hill has fouled opposition players 54 times this season and has been booked 10 times making his ratio of fouls per booking one in every 5.4 - compared with nine for Bothroyd and 7.7 for Adam.
League 1
Milton Keynes Dons top the discipline stats in League 1 and have collected 106 yellow cards so far this season. This is 37 more bookings than next placed Oldham Athletic. They also lead the foul count with 519 in their 38 games. Brighton and Hove Albion are the only other team to have conceded more than 500 fouls with 504 and Gus Poyet's side lead the red card count with eight sending's off in 38 games. They also share the record of most penalties conceded so far with Oldham, both teams having given away seven spot kicks.
Wycombe Wanderers are officially the least booked team with just 37 yellow cards and 2 reds although Exeter City have conceded the fewest fouls - just 351 in 38 games.
Yeovil Town's midfielder Jean-Paul Kalala is officially League 1's most booked player and has collected 14 yellow cards including two in Yeovil's away fixture at Gillingham in November. His foul count of 50 means his fouls per booking ratio is just 3.5. Norwich City striker Grant Holt has conceded the most fouls in League 1 collecting seven yellow cards and one red for his 76 fouls. MK Dons striker Jermaine Easter has fouled just fifty-five times but has been yellow carded 10 times.
League 2
Northampton Town have conceded more fouls than any other team in League 2. Their total of 479 is 18 more than next placed Shrewsbury Town. Grimsby Town are third with 460 and have had seven players sent off so far this season - more than any other League 2 club. Automatic promotion candidates Notts County are the most generous team in their own box having given eight penalties away in their 36 games played so far.
Crewe Alexandra have the best disciplinary record in the Coca-Cola Football League and have collected just 26 yellow cards from their 271 fouls this season. Their foul count is 72 less than any other team in the Football League, although they have received four red cards.
Barnet midfielder Mark Hughes leads the yellow card count in League 2 with 11 bookings in 32 appearances. Dagenham and Redbridge's midfielder Peter Gain also has 11 yellow cards but has conceded six fouls fewer than Hughes. Once again a striker leads the foul count - Morecambe's Paul Mullin leads this stat with 68.
