Cousins skippers Young Lions to success
Charlton youngster Jordan Cousins skippered England U16s to success in their opening game of the Montaigu tournament on Wednesday.
The 16-year-old led the Young Lions to a 3-1 victory against Ukraine in France, and will be hoping to edge closer to the final of the competition with a win against Gabon on Thursday evening.
The Ukraine match, played in St Gilles De Vie in the Vendee region, saw a solid all-round display from Kenny Swain's side, and keeps England on course to retain the trophy they lifted last year.
The versatile Cousins, a regular in Charlton's U18 side this season despite his tender years, was a substitute when England beat Germany on penalties 12 months ago, but he skippered England to a record-extending ninth successive Victory Shield title earlier this season.
Cousins, who can play across the backline and in midfield, watched Everton's Hallam Hope put England in front after 16 minutes.
The early stages of the second half were dramatic as Ukraine levelled matters before England immediately regained their advantage three minutes in.
Raheem Sterling, who has recently joined Liverpool from Queens Park Rangers, grabbed that second go-ahead-goal, and Hope made sure of the win from the penalty spot midway through the half.
Japan beat Gabon 3-0 in Group B's other opening fixture, and England will take on the Africans at 5pm in their second game.
Their campaign concludes against Japan on Saturday afternoon, and the winners of the group will face the winners of Group A, which includes Portugal, United Arab Emirates, Benin and hosts France, in the final.
