Probably because they were too scared to get rid of him before now in case they felt the end of his boot.

Guardian/Gary Payne Roy Keane faces the sack at Ipswich Town this week• Club have lost patience after poor run of results • Irishman philosophical about prospect of the chop Roy Keane is set to lose his job as Ipswich Town manager this week. The Guardian understands that the club's board has lost patience with Keane less than a year after taking charge at Portman Road and will announce his departure in the coming days. Ipswich's draw at Swansea City lifted them nine points above the relegation zone but the failure to make it into the play-offs after a season spent battling for survival appears finally to have taken its toll. Keane is being linked with a return to Celtic next season after the Scottish club ended Tony Mowbray's reign as manager last week. It will hardly come as a surprise to Keane, though, when the curtain does fall 11 months after taking over from Jim Magilton considering his comments after this weekend's result. "There's speculation about my job, but there are much better managers than me who have lost their jobs," the former Manchester United midfielder said. "If the club wants to move me on, then they'll move me on and there's very little I can do about it. This sort of talk doesn't keep me awake at night and my players shouldn't take any notice of it, either. "If I lose my job, I lose my job. There's always speculation about lots of managers in the Premier League and Championship so it's nothing new. If you think I'm fearful of that, don't kid yourself. I've got a good wife and five good kids so I'll be OK whatever happens." www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/mar/28/roy-keane-ipswich-town-manager

OR maybe not! Mail Ipswich chief rubbishes reports Roy Keane is set for the sack By Mel Henderson Last updated at 9:28 AM on 29th March 2010 Comments (0) Add to My Stories Vote of confidence: Keane Ipswich boss Roy Keane is not facing the sack, the club insisted today. Chief executive Simon Clegg moved to put a lid on speculation that Keane was about to depart Portman Road after just 11 months in charge. Clegg, leader of Britain's record-breaking Olympic team in Beijing in 2008 and whose appointment coincided with that of the manager in April last year, said: 'I am still fully committed to Roy Keane. It has been a disappointing season but Roy is still building his team. 'I understand there have been some speculation stories but Roy is just starting out to get us where we want to be.' Clegg's backing is no surprise since he and the club's owner, reclusive multi-millionaire Marcus Evans, have consistently stood by him. Evans provided an £8million transfer kitty to fund the purchases of Grant Leadbitter and Carlos Edwards from Keane's former club, Sunderland, together with Tamas Priskin from Watford, Lee Martin from Manchester United and Damien Delaney from QPR. Despite Keane's new-look side making the worst start to a season in the club's 73-year professional history, finally securing their first league win at the 15th time of asking, he was backed 100 per cent. The Tractor Boys' form has shown a marked improvement since then and they have lost just six of their last 25 Championship fixtures. But rumours that the Manchester United legend is on his way, with ex-Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley touted as a possible successor, have persisted in recent weeks. Keane has consistently maintained that he has no fear of the sack, insisting after Saturday's 0-0 draw at Swansea: 'This speculation doesn't keep me up at night. 'There are a lot better managers than me who have lost their jobs. If you think that I'm fearful of losing my job, then don't kid yourself.' www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1261562/Roy-Keane-safe-sack-says-Ipswich-chief-Simon-Clegg.html
