A documentary film about football fanzines is set to include Bradford City’s award-winning The City Gent.
The fanzine, which last year was voted the best in League Two in the New Football Polls Fanzine Awards 2008, has been going for 25 years. Mike Harrison, editor for almost five of those years, said: “We were told that Ken Loach is doing a film about FC United of Manchester and he wanted a documentary about football fans to accompany the film.”
London-based Feasible Films, which specialises in behind-the-scenes documentaries, want to start filming at Valley Parade on January 17 when City are due to play Accrington Stanley.
Toby Reisz, co-founder of the company, said: “Two years ago I made a film about Ken Loach for his 70th birthday. Now he wants a documentary about football fans as a companion piece to his latest movie, Looking For Eric, which has as a backdrop FC United, the break-away Manchester United team.
“I am talking to fans around the country to see if they feel disenfranchised, cast aside for more corporate needs. Mike is one of them.
“The City Gent caught my eye and then I met Mike. I found him an engaging character. I don’t want a stereotypical football fan. I am looking for people who are passionate and articulate.”
Ken Loach’s film, Looking For Eric, features former United and French international star Eric Cantona, who plays a life coach to a disillusioned Manchester postman. The film is due out in May.
Mr Reisz said: “What will happen to it is it will go on the DVD of Looking For Eric and if Channel 4 like it, it may go on Channel 4 or one of their other TV channels.
“My film will be funded through various sources connected to Ken Loach’s film funding.”
The other fans in the film come from Everton, QPR, Stoke, FC United in Manchester and perhaps Liverpool, Mr Reisz said.
