Cunningham in charge - for now
Thursday 11th March 2010
TOMMY CUNNINGHAM will manage Harlow Town on a game-by-game basis until a satisfactory appointment is made in the dugout, the former QPR defender has revealed.
Cunningham, who bossed the Hawks for three years last decade, recently bought the ailing club with business partner John Barnett.
Marvin Samuel was sacked as boss last Wednesday, and Cunningham took charge for Tuesday night’s victory at VCD Athletic and for Saturday’s defeat at Northwood.
He tells the Harlow Herald: “At the moment I’m doing it on a game to game basis. Kevin Warren is helping me, Lee Protheroe is team captain and Danny Chapman is club captain.
“I spent years here and we need to get the continuity that culminated in us getting promotion. When Ryan Kirby was was sacked as manager everything changed and it’s not been the same since. I want to put back in place that continuity.
“The next manager has got to be someone we are comfortable with and, looking long term, is the right person. They have got to understand how we need it to be run.
“I’m not short of experience so there is no rush and I’m not looking for a quick fix. I’m more than capable of doing it in the short term assisted by the right people.”
Cunningham is hoping Tuesday night’s win at VCD will kick-start Harlow’s bid for survival ahead of a big week for the club.
The Hawks, currently rock bottom of Ryman League Division One North and 13 points adrift of safety, host mid-table Tilbury on Saturday and visit fellow strugglers Redbridge on Tuesday night.
“We have got to win our games and hope others drop points” he said. “We don’t want to be relegated and have got to do all we can on the football pitch to ensure that doesn’t happen.
“We need to go out and get three points against Tilbury and then we can look at the Redbridge game which will be a real six pointer.”
