Massimo Cellino, the president of Italian club Cagliari is closing in on a bid to buy Crystal Palace , according to reports in the Italian media.

Cellino had been interested in purchasing West Ham back in January, launching a reported £100m bid before David Sullivan and David Gold took over at Upton Park. Despite Cellino's failure on that occasion, he has not given up hope of entering English football, according to Italian daily Corriere dello Sport.

Crystal Palace are in administration and as a consequence of their financial woes have had ten points deducted, plunging them into a relegation battle at the bottom of the Championship. Last week, they lost their influential manager Neil Warnock to London rivals Queens Park Rangers with former Portsmouth boss Paul Hart taking over the Selhurst Park hotseat.

Corriere dello Sport reports that Cellino is "very close to an agreement" with Palace administrator Brendan Guilfoyle.

Should his bid for Crystal Palace fail, Corriere dello Sport reports that Cellino will attempt to buy Queens Park Rangers . However, this would seem an unlikely development given the recent revamped ownership of the West London club under the Mittal family.

Cellino has been in charge of Serie A club Cagliari since 1992. The club currently lies in eighth position in Italy's top division.

Colourful Cagliari president Massimo Cellino is interested in buying troubled Crystal Palace.

The Italian, who failed in a bid to buy West Ham United in January, has also had a look at the considerably more wealthy Queens Park Rangers in his determination to buy into English football.

Crystal Palace were hit with a 10-point penalty for going into administration, plunging them from the battle for a play-off place to just a place above the drop zone in the Coca-Cola Championship.

Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport says Cellino, a convicted fraudtser, is 'very close to an agreement' with Palace administrator Brendan Guilfoyle.
The paper say QPR are his second choice, but there are no indications that the billionaire Mittal family would be willing to sell.
Cellino would face questions over his suitability to own a club.

In 1996, the 53-year-old was held in custody for eight days and later convicted of deceiving the EU and the Italian Ministry for Agriculture out of £7.5million. He plea-bargained a reduced and suspended 14-month sentence.
Then in 2001 he was handed a 15-month suspended sentence for false accounting at the Serie A club he controls.

I try to explain that the right name is QUEENS, but the italian journalists are...ahem... duri come pietre (heavy like stones).

A journalist wrote to me: "You're wrong! The park is called 'Queen's Park', so the team is called Queeen's Park Rangers! It's natural! It's obvious!"

The first crest "registered trademark" is the third in the Markqpr signature, right?
(the first with "Queens" instead of "Queen's")
It was registered in 14th september 1972 (my birthdate, that's why I remember it!
