33 people were killed and over 500 injured when a crush barrier collapsed at Burnden Park during the F.A. Cup tie between Bolton Wanderers and Stoke City. After a hold-up during which the victims were removed from the pitch the match was completed on police advice in order to avoid panic! The result was a goalless draw but Bolton progressed on aggregate by virtue of their 2-0 win at Stoke the previous week.
09 March 1963
Tommy Cummings, Burnley centre-half and full-back, joined Mansfield Town as player-manager. Started his senior career with the Lancashire club shortly after the War and made his debut in 1949 when he took over from Alan Brown at centre-half. He was a member of their 1960 Championship side and played in the 1962 Cup Final when they were beaten 3-1 by Tottenham Hotspur. His representative honours were confined to England "B" and Football League but in December 1961 he was elected president of the P.F.A. when Jimmy Hill resigned to become manager of Coventry City. He, in turn, handed over to Malcolm Musgrove whe his Mansfield appointment was confirmed. Guided Mansfield to promotion to the Third Division at the end of his first full season. During his playing career he made 434 League appearances with Burnley and 11 with Mansfield.
