The Northern Section of the Third Division was formed with 20 original memebers: Accrington Stanley, Ashington, Barrow, Chesterfield, Crewe Alexandra, Darlington, Durham City, Grimsby Town, Halifax Town, Hartlepools United, Lincoln City, Nelson, Rochdale, Southport, Stalybridge Celtic, Stockport County, Tranmere Rovers, Walsall, Wigan Borough and Wrexham. Stockport were the first champions and the Section was extended to 22 clubs in 1923 when Doncaster Rovers and New Brighton were elected.

Tom Parker, Arsenal full-back and former captain, was appointed manager at Norwich City. He had started his career in the Southern League with Southampton and was transferred to Arsenal in March 1926. He played in the 1927 Cup final when they were beaten by Cardiff City and captained the successful side of 1930 when the Gunners beat Huddersfield Town 2-0 at Wembley. His only England appearance was against France in 1925. Made 465 Football League appearances and scored 26 goals mainly from the penalty spot.

With goalkeeping problems brought about by injuries and the distinct possibility of winning the F.A. Cup Derby County signed Chelsea's former England international Victor Woodley and went on to lift the trophy. He had joined Chelsea in 1931 from Windsor and Eton and immediately showed his brilliance by holding off the challenge of Scotland 'keeper Johnny Jackson for the No 1 spot at Stamford Bridge. In addition, once he broke into the England team, he kept the shirt for 19 consecutive internationals up to the War despite playing for a side struggling for much of the time against relegation. He appeared in 252 peacetime League matches for the Blues and his last major match with them was against Moscow Dynamo in 1946. Joined Bath City as manager at the end of the 1947 season.

John Charles, Leeds United centre-half, became the youngest Welsh international in history when he played in the goalless draw against Ireland at Wrexham. He was 18 years and 2 months at the time. He won a total of 38 caps in all and this would probably have been higher had he not spent five years playing in Italy.
