In the annual match for the Sheriff of London Shield, which was contested annually between the top professional and top amateur side, Totenham Hotspur beat Corinthians 5-2. At the time Spurs were members of the Southern League and holders of the F.A. Cup. Corinthians were also very strong and had beaten Aston Villa 1-0 to win the Shield in 1900. In 1904 they beat Bury 10-3 and the latter had won the F.A. Cup in 1903 by a record 6-0 margin when they defeated Derby County.

Sutton United were fined £100 for playing H. Whiteson and L. Baldwin in the Fourth Round Amateur Cup tie in which they beat holders Leyton. The two players had both been engaged in Sunday football which was not recognised by the F.A. at the time. Both players were suspended sine die and the tie was awarded to Leyton.

Tottenham Hotspur transferred Eugene "Taffy" O'Callaghan to Leicester City. A clever inside-forward and former Welsh schoolboy international he made his League debut in 1926-27 and played so well that Jimmy Seed was never able to regain his place. Won his first full cap for Wales in 1929 and eventually won 11 caps up to 1935. He appeared in 252 League matches and scored 89 goals for Spurs before his move to Filbert Street. Went to Fulham in the autumn of 1937 and remained there until the outbreak of the Second War. His total League record read 125 goals in 375 appearances. After the War he became Fulham coach and was a great influence on the young Johnny Haynes. "Taffy" died in the summer of 1956 at the age of just 49.

Jack Froggart, who was capped 13 times by England between 1950 and 1953 at both outside-left and later centre-half, transferred from Portsmouth to Leicester City. Joined Pompey at the end of the Second War and was in their Championship sides of 1948 and 1949. Remained with City until 1958 when he moved to Southern League Kettering Town as player manager. He played 422 League matches and scored 83 goals.

Burnley transferred their England outside-left Brian Pilkington to Bolton Wanderers after he had played 300 League games for the club and scored 66 goals. He remained at Bolton for three years before moving to Bury and later Barrow.

West Bromwich Albion meet Leeds United in the teams seventh meeting of the season. The are victorious 2-0 in an FA Cup Fourth Round Replay.

Alan Hansen retires from his sucessful career at Liverpool. He was signed by Bob Paisley for £ 100,000 from Partick Thistle in 1977 and went on to become a regular in the number six shirt. He went on to win three European Cups (1978,1981 and 1984), eight First Division Titles (1978-9, 1979-80, 1981-2, 1982-3, 1983-4, 1985-6, 1987-88 and 1989-90), two FA Cups (1986 and 1989) and three League Cups (1981, 1983 and 1984). He made a total of 623 first team matches for the Reds scoring 13 goals. He also won 26 Caps for Scotland.
